After an announced hiring freeze, teachers reportedly being layed off, others being transferred to Ruwais against their will, does anyone know why HCT is looking for English faculty?

Don't tell me, their August recalculation of numbers and additional sections has come early or have they really started to plan ahead after all these years!

They like to keep a pool of teachers so they can call them at a moments notice. That's what I here.

I'm just speculating... but, if they did push many people to transfer who didn't wish to go and they chose to resign instead, that could mean that they now need teachers. ...or...

I know that they have been offering people contracts since TESOL, so they were hiring. Perhaps these people didn't accept. One person that I know was offered for a city that he didn't want, so he turned it down.

Guess they want a pool of suitable people if student numbers are higher in August.

Faculty were moved when it was thought numbers would fall, but now with what looks lke a positive outcome on funding discussions it seems student numbers may be higher.

Ha! Ha! I don't think so...but what I did witness today was rather shocking. Yesterday I heard that a campus in the Western region of a certain Emirate had to "relocate" 10 teachers from the HD English program and today I saw a rumour confirmed, a new adjunct hired at the college in the main urban center of the Emirate, the same college that had to "relocate" 17 teaching staff, walking down the hall with her husband after quickly acquiring a CELTA during the 5 months since he was hired full-time. Another case of "It's not what you know, but who you know"?

Nothing odd about any of this. If I'm told I'll receive "student-based" funding --- I'll maximize enrollment. If I'm told I'll receive funding - but that it's fixed, regardless of enrollment --- I'll minimize enrollment.

Last I heard, higher education was moving toward "formula" funding. Naturally, they're doing their best to maximize enrollment.

Besides --- why walk away from the bragging rights about being the UAE's largest institution?

Not all colleges were hit with the hiring freeze - a few have been hiring all along. Add to that the issue that VS mentioned of teachers turning down offers, some colleges are still looking for August...

Yes indeed, sowsan.

Anyway, I understand the general feeling amongst the 17 is that they're better off elsewhere anyway.

So I guess everybody's happy - ish. Laughing
