After an announced hiring freeze, teachers reportedly being layed off, others being transferred to Ruwais against their will, does anyone know why HCT is looking for English faculty?
Don't tell me, their August recalculation of numbers and additional sections has come early or have they really started to plan ahead after all these years! |

They like to keep a pool of teachers so they can call them at a moments notice. That's what I here. |

I'm just speculating... but, if they did push many people to transfer who didn't wish to go and they chose to resign instead, that could mean that they now need teachers. ...or...
I know that they have been offering people contracts since TESOL, so they were hiring. Perhaps these people didn't accept. One person that I know was offered for a city that he didn't want, so he turned it down.

Guess they want a pool of suitable people if student numbers are higher in August.
Faculty were moved when it was thought numbers would fall, but now with what looks lke a positive outcome on funding discussions it seems student numbers may be higher. |

Ha! Ha! I don't think so...but what I did witness today was rather shocking. Yesterday I heard that a campus in the Western region of a certain Emirate had to "relocate" 10 teachers from the HD English program and today I saw a rumour confirmed, a new adjunct hired at the college in the main urban center of the Emirate, the same college that had to "relocate" 17 teaching staff, walking down the hall with her husband after quickly acquiring a CELTA during the 5 months since he was hired full-time. Another case of "It's not what you know, but who you know"? |

Nothing odd about any of this. If I'm told I'll receive "student-based" funding --- I'll maximize enrollment. If I'm told I'll receive funding - but that it's fixed, regardless of enrollment --- I'll minimize enrollment.
Last I heard, higher education was moving toward "formula" funding. Naturally, they're doing their best to maximize enrollment.
Besides --- why walk away from the bragging rights about being the UAE's largest institution? |

Not all colleges were hit with the hiring freeze - a few have been hiring all along. Add to that the issue that VS mentioned of teachers turning down offers, some colleges are still looking for August... |

Yes indeed, sowsan.
Anyway, I understand the general feeling amongst the 17 is that they're better off elsewhere anyway.
So I guess everybody's happy - ish. |

Hi L2A.
(not running down your answer, I agree with your points about how different people are making different amounts, and some new people are making more than old timers with experience, just clarifying a starting salary because UCS asked for approximately. And 12,000 a month is more than 10,000)
Most of the new hires from this last year who had the MA and 3 to 5 years of experience came in making somewhere in the ballpark of 12,000 AED per month (give or take 1,000 AED a month depending on other qualifications, negotiations, etc) This is for foundations, diploma english teachers. If you are a content teacher you make more... so if you are teaching IT, education, Math etc... you will get paid more to start.
All of the instructors including the new ones will be getting that 15% payraise starting in August, so it should raise the starting salary for the 3 to 5 years experience and MA (applied linguistics, TESL,TEFL, or related) to about 13500. And teachers who are currently working there will also get the 4% annual pay raise
But other than that, you are spot on, and I agree with you

I interviewed w/ HCT a few months ago, and I was told that the starting salary range (not based on my experience) was usually around 3000-3600 USD/month. |

Good, all good. Same ballpark, so UCS will have the correct info. Thanks all. It's good to get an update.

I just accepted an offer of 15K + 15%. I have an MA with less than 10 years of teaching experience and I'll be teaching content. Judging from the range listed here it seems it was a good offer. |

I would say so. Congratulations. Content is the way to go. ESL teachers are a dirham a dozen.
First year - don't take anything personally, listen a lot, don't ask a lot of questions to one person (spread it around), trust no one. After a year, you'll get a better feel. Also, don't spend all your furniture allowance right away. Take your time and find things you like.
Good luck! The UAE is a great place if you don't take it seriously.
(If you have already lived here, sorry for being bossy. The above are just things I and others have learned.) |
