Are there any good EFL jobs in Imdramayu? What's it like to live there? Is there any good reason to go there? What are the people like?

Indramayu is a small town. Nothing much happens there except the production of dried fish and the unloading of oil tankers at the terminal. I have never heard of ESL teaching jobs in that area.

I'm curious as to your interest in selecting this city?

Apart from what Malu mentions, Indramayu is most notoriously known as a major supply area for migratory sex workers. This includes both adult women and children. The district is also know for pre-arranged marriages at a very early age. Often with girls as young as 10-12 years.

There is a lack of industry in the town and very few employment options. I seriously doubt you could secure a regular english teaching gig there.

So much so that many women will not admit they come from there, claiming instead to come from nearby Semarang. However, for many Indramayu parents, a daughter means guaranteed employment and money...

Er.... no. And which towns in "Sunda" are you talking about?

Mate, nobody said such a thing.

He asked what is the town and people like in Indramayu. I replied with my knowledge on both. We don't know his motivations for asking because he hasn't responded yet.

Back to the topic, this link below gives an interesting insight into life in Indramayu. It's a sociological study on women from this city who embark on migratory sex work with a focus on their reasons for doing so. p.6-7 gives a description of Indramayu itself.

Interestingly Indramayu also has one of the lowest literacy rates and highest divorce rates in Indonesia.

Highly disingenuous to even suggest it, IMHO. And for the pedant who pulled me on Sunda, OK, West Java it is.

Once again, just providing substantiated information on how life is there.

Indramayu's reasons for notoriety may not be something Indonesia's Tourism Minister promotes, but it's a truth all the same. I think the original poster would appreciate it being said.

I just poked my nose into Indramayu last week and can now offer a little more first hand information.

It's a 2 hour train trip from Jakarta to Jati Barang. You then take a motorcycle taxi for a 20 minute trip to Indramayu.

It has a very small and sedate town centre. It's relatively clean and easy to get around. The town is surrounded by rice fields which appear quite dry this time of year.

Last week, the local government closed all the bars and nightclubs. There is however, someone's house that's been converted into a nightclub about 15 minutes from the town centre. Alternatively, you could go to Cirebon, 1 hour to the east if you are after more nightlife options.

The people I encountered were very friendly and basic, as you'd expect in any small Indonesian town.

The beaches I saw were dirty and not suitable for swimming. Although, there seems to be plenty of fishing opportunities if that's your thing.

Hope that helps.
