I took it last semester. Most of the questions were not that difficult -- naming colours, animals and all the exosolar planets so far discovered. The most brain straining was the 100 word essay, "Why Breathe Soot When Life is So Short?" I only managed about seven words before my time was up.
Still, I must have done well: my FEC was renewed, even stamped with three |

I took the test last week. The knowledge test is quite difficult. It is not about naming colors and animals. It is about China, Chinese history and culture, world events and even have some Math, linguistics and literature questions.
The Writing test is about 200 words. I didn't get a high score in the test. So, I'm a little worried because no one seems to know what China is going to do with the test results. |

Why do we have to do math tests when we teach English? |

The results will be used to roll "waijiao" cigarettes. |

Is this test compulsory to renew a FEC? I've heard in Thailand if you want a working permit you need to take some sort of culture course. Get this, the cost of the course is two months the average salary. |

I missed the question about what China's national mascot was.
I wrote in Charlie Brown when the correct answer was Panda.
I think I may just lose me expert certification over this... |

Who scores the essay part? Chinese? If so, forget the entire matter. |

the evaluation has caused quite a stir in my office. I was just about to ask if anyone has heard of it. I've refused to take it, but I'm leaving after this school year, so it doesn't matter. |

Hope this calms everyone's fears of possibly losing their part-time lives in China...

This first question in the elementary section is to screen out inbreds. The usefulness of the third question is somewhat baffling. You'll also be asked whether China is a member of NATO. Don't get carried away on the question about Chinese personality traits (question 6). I chose "crazy" and the computer winked at me. I also chose c*ck (question 10) as China's national treasure.
And, of course, there has to be a fuckin' question about Jane Austen.
The 200 word essay question:
"Is the rapid and enormous development of China a chance or a challenge to the remainder of the world"
Essentially, if you are Chinese, you should do well on this evaluation.
Have Fun and Good Luck! |

I especially like question 33 in the elementary section:
"What is the title of the dictionary compiled by Samuel Johnson
a) First English Dictionary
b) Dictionary of English Language
c) A Dictionary of the English Language
d) Dictionary of the English Language
the question regarding the most common skin colour among Chinese (30) is amusing as well.
More dribble drooled out by china's party members... |

Bugger, blew the how much do you tip a KTV girl question. I put down 200 Kuai, but apparently if youre a Party member, it's covered by the state (hence the need for foreigners to have basic math skills)
This struck my interest from the above link:

Why do the Chinese people always stare at foreigners?
From: Time:2006/06/23
There are a reported 50,000 foreigners living in Beijing. But, unless you go to their expensive watering holes (Starbucks, etc.) or visit their expensive ghettos, you will hardly ever see one in 85% of the city. Therefore it is a "I wonder what he/she is doing in this part of town?" stare. It's the same kind of reaction that a white person gets in Harlem or a Black person in Westchester. Don't take it personally. Smile, nod and say "Ni hao". This disarms the curiosity and always brings a big smile, a return "Ni hao" and even a "Welcome to China". |
Wa ha ha..
There's obviously a cultural misunderstanding from my end. I was hoping for something more useful like:
Why Chinese women with foreigners are referred to in less than flattering terms by groups of 'men' who stare, yell heeelloo and then giggle like little girls.
