If someone is wanting do this seriously, the first stop should be LANCELOT School as it has a certificate equivalent to the DELTA for the online world, which teaches three aspects which is crucial for live online teaching: (similar to the DELTA as opposed to CELTA as you must be TEFL/TESL certified and have experience) www.lancelot-course.com
1)methodology specifically targeted to live online teaching
2)intercultural communicative competence
3)technology (and how to help your students with the technology)
In adddition, the LANCELOT certificate is ICC certified and if you want, you can get nine credit hours. LANCELOT School also has a recruitment center where language schools and companies can request certified live online trainers.
During the last two years and especially the last six months I have come across many, many portals for language teachers. Here is a list in alphabetical order that I posted on another forum of the portals I have come across. (commentary on some of the portals I have signed up with)
Avilano
http://www.avilano.com/
Buddy School
http://www.buddyschool.com/
This school offers training in anything...
ChooseI
http://www.choosei.com/tutoring.aspx
Not just language, but any kind of tutoring
Edufire
http://edufire.com/
I was contacted immediately from the edufire team to check my equipment, which was very encouraging. I haven't been able to followup on them although I plan to...
English Everywhere
http://www.englisheverywhere.com/howitworksd.html
English Bee (formerly Culture Link Online)
http://www.english-bee.com/eb-teacher/33-home.php
I was on the portal for about a year before I got students. The students I have had have been very good about showing up. No VC and the training is through Skype or MSN.
Find A Tutor
http://www.findatutor.co.nz/
Have had several inquiries from students although most have wanted face-to-face. This is not just a language site...f2f tutoring in all subjects as well.
Find My Favorite Teacher
http://www.findmyfavouriteteacher.com/
Find Your Teachers
http://www.findyourteachers.com/
ForteMall
http://www.fortemall.com/
I have an account with them, but as yet haven't figured out the system. If someone else has, please comment.
Learnissimo
http://www.learnissimo.com/index.php/EN/english-french-spanish-lessons
They require everyone to have a video and preview the video. They have a great archive and a very basic VC. You are not on the portal if you do not show available times, which is quite nice.
Lingueo
http://www.lingueo.com/default/index
Linkua
http://www.linkua.com/
Myngle
http://www.myngle.com/
The community of teachers are very excited about Myngle and they have a very active community. They have a new VC, which is quite nice compared to what they started with. Myngle's strength is their advertising and public relations. If you sign up for them, be sure to get a free consultation as it is imperative to be successful on this site.
Spoken Skills
http://www.spokenskills.com/
Teacher James
http://www.teacherjames.com/
I see this site as the site with a lot of potential. The VC is quite good and their is potential to make some money through their 'study hall' course. It does appear, however, that they have more teachers signed up than students although it may be changing.

Thanks for the great info Holly S!! I now have some more research to do.
May I pose a couple of questions for HS or other members?
1. I am unclear what ICC Certified means. International Code Council?
2. Here in Canada I have completeded 70 hours of a 100 hour International TESOL Certificate (40 hours in-class instruction on theory/methodology and lesson planning/presentation, 30 hours grammar refresher and 30 hours online specialization). There is then a subsequent 20-60 hour practicum. I already have a 4 year Bachelors in English Lit and French Language. What is your sense of the marketability of such a qualifications, both for teaching work internationally, and for online English teaching?
(Added later - I am studying the forum and getting info on this last subject, but if anyone wants to post some specific feedback here, that would be great - CD) |

About the course, usually employers ask for 120 hours with 6 teaching students. But 100 hour course might be ok too.
Your BA will help for visas, so you should be able to get your foot in the door. then once you start teaching, you can get more qualifications.
See the PM I sent you too |

Thanks HS...
The ICC - International Certificate Conference e.V. is a Non-Government Organisation (NGO) with participatory status at the Council of Europe. ICC sets standards for a transnational network of language learners.
The ICC - Euopean Language Network provides foreign languages teaching and learning with exchange of ideas and know how

And ta for the feedback, NG. I will soon be doing additional volunteer teaching to bolster my skills and references. Will get back to your PM soon... |

BTW, LANCELOT School will be starting new courses in English and German in January. We are having living online Virtual Round Tables to discuss the course and how to get into this type of teaching this week and next(December 10, 12 & 17). You can enroll at: http://www.lancelot.at/registration.html if you are interested. |

It's all happening at this school Having taught online for a year I was aware that my skills were lacking in not only the know how of available technology and other teaching aids, but in the best way to present and conduct online sessions.
As I was determined to make online my main line of work I decided to look for a suitable training course. After viewing some of those on offer I discovered Lancelot, a European Union, ICC approved course and, most importantly, monitored by them. So i was assured that my money would be well spent!
I have no regrets! The course was dynamic, covered the technical skills side in a systematic and thorough manner, and, most importantly, in a way that a techie nerd could understand and achieve success.
The lesson planning and other materials covered were entertaining and valuable. My only criticism is that some of the intercultural communication material was sometimes repetitive.
The backup as been second to none and graduates of the course are encouraged to share and help one another via a community site. And the DOS is always on hand as well
Anyone planning a career in online teaching would be well advised to check out this course. And best of all they are moving into Second Life! Watch this space. If you have any questions just contact me.[/size] |
