Based on all the posts you've submitted in the last several days, I'd say you're in the midst of some kind of mid-life, or mid-career, crisis. You're burnt out on China and you can't figure out where to go-- Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam or wherever... . You keep asking for advice, and I've given you some in previous postings but you haven't responded to mine or anyone else'.
You're 41 years old, a BA, been teaching ESL for 12 years with no certificate.
Do you like teaching ESL? If so, then get better qualifications, i.e. a Masters degree or proper state certification, which might mean going back to the States for a while.
Do you not like teaching ESL? If not, then please move on to something else, for the sake of your students, the profession and yourself.
MOD EDIT
Do you not like living in very different cultures, like China? If not, find somewhere that suits you; maybe you belong back in the States.
Good luck; sounds like you've got a few things to sort out. You're not that young so you should think about which direction you've been heading in.

We have never entertained discussions of fake certificates, degrees, diplomas, etc., on this site. Members who persist in promoting such discussions usually become ex-members very quickly. |

MOD EDIT
With all of the experience you have, why would there not be tons of work available to you? Anywhere?
Honestly, have you considered another industry, perhaps in your home country?
It's easier getting employment in a person's home-country than it is in EFL overseas. |

Just come on over K. Be interesting to see how long u can last in Vietnam.
China is a cushy compared to VN. There's a price to be paid for a better pay rate here.
If VN is such an agreeable place to be , with loads of money thrown into the mix, why isn't it overwhelmed with teachers?
good luck. |

Go to Korea, get a job in a smaller city where they appreciate foreigners more.
Or get a TEFL certification and get a job in one of the smaller cities in Vietnam. |

It isn't? Seems like nearly every expat I meet here is a teacher... My school alone has hundreds on foreign teachers... Vietnam is indeed a popular and well-paying place to teach. |

really?......"hundreds on foreign teachers"
100 in a class?
100 sitting on poor teacher?
they pay YOU 20 bucks an hour to "teach"?
probably the reason every expat u meet is a teacher is because you're working in a school, or you're a teacher.....Duh!
Some of your comments from another post......
On one hand, you're saying Hcmc is polluted with lots of traffic but then you state,
"easily navigable, especially by motorbike, the commute times are generally pretty short,..."
some other gems i don't even want to comment on........
"You can get all sorts of awesome food--Vietnamese food"
"you can make $16/hr without having to argue for it"
"The schools here are very reputable"
"And I really would say the rumor that Vietnamese people only care about your money holds absolutely no water"
whatever! haha, this site is awesome!!! |

How immature do you have to be to make such a comment about a one-letter typo? My intent was clear.

It probably helps... and there sure are a lot!

There can be lots of traffic, but even driving from one end of the center city to another hardly ever takes more than 30 minutes. I live 5 minutes from my school, and with the kind of money teachers make it's easy to live centrally and near your school. The "downtown" area is relatively small compared to most other cities with the population of HCMC. But there is a lot of pollution, unfortunately, and certain streets from 4-6 pm can be a nightmare.

Yeah, there are a lot of people who do like it, especially the street food, which is everywhere. And cheap! It's not Thai food, but there are still a lot of delicious treats to be had.

I didn't have to argue for it, did you?

What major school have you worked at that wasn't?

Most of my students only care about money in general, but not my money. They want to make a ton themselves and become rich, not steal mine. And yes, foreigners will get charged more--tell me a place this isn't true. |

erica, you just come across as being rather childlike and simplistic in your writing and thoughts.
someone else has already pointed out,and i agree that your opinion is of no consequence to me. try and delve a little deeper because i really don't wanna try and engage with some one who.......
"Yeah, there are a lot of people who do like it"
...yeah and there are a lot of people who hate it.......what kind of arguement is this?
", especially the street food, which is everywhere."
streets are everywhere, where else should food stalls be, no where?
" And cheap! It's not Thai food, but there are still a lot of delicious treats to be had"
yes, it's not thai food coz we're in vietnam.
Did you mean that thai food is better but you find that hard to accept and say.....
jesus wept,i could go on but it's pointless. my 6th graders can debate better.
anyway, good luck to u and enjoy the rest of your stay. i won't be back to enlighten further on this topic. frankly, you bore me. |

i suspect the reason why this board is so overwhelmingly negative because the majority of teachers in saigon don't have the time or the patience to deal with people like you (myself included). which is a shame, i think, because a lot of prospective teachers turn to websites like this for reliable information, and what they get is an outrageously skewed perspective. i was attempting to provide a counterbalance to the incessant griping on this board by sharing my experiences, but evidently displaying positivity and optimism appears to you to be "childish" and "simplistic."
anywhere a person goes, the experience is what one makes of it. most people who choose to come all the way to Vietnam to work actually embrace the experience, rather than dismissing everything so automatically. which means they don't end up as desperately miserable as you appear to be. you, too, would probably be a lot happier if you took that chip off your shoulder.
which begs the question... if you hate it so much, why are you still here? |

i don't want to go back home because i want to avoid meeting girls like you. i'm definately into the asian gals.
i'm not a rascist, i find all western women equally unattracive.
was wondering when the..." why don't you go back home then"...remark would come up?
well, i am not a white male.
tchh! you're so predictable.
ciao bella! |
