Everywhere I have worked they ask for interviews. I say ya but it must be humorous. I learned this trick working the prisons in Korea with Catholic priests. They ask you what Chinese(Korean) food you like and you say noodle and then they translate it into 1000 KOrean dishes and then they ask you what are your hobbies and you say basketball, internetting, tai-qi . wei-qi , painting , blogging etc etc and so on, and they say he likes sleeping.
The fun part of doing this is that most of the people around you have no idea what is going on.

What exactly is the point here ?

There is no point. Just like the Australian embassodor addressing Chinese diplomats in Chinese and then having a translator say the same words again. No point in trying to edify people who just want a monkey fave to sing and dance for them. No point in talking to someone who isn't listening but wants to here their own voice asking you questions. There is no point in one sided I talk and don't listen conversations.

It's a comedy routine. It is meant to be funny. The interesting thing is that most people don't catch on. They are listening to the translation and not the English speaker. The person translating translates something short into a long discourse and something long on words gets a one word translation. Try it sometime the next time you do an interview.

At the risk of offending Buck Lin, it seems to me that with English like yours they would get only a monkey face and nothing else.
