hi,

I just got a job offer to teach in Taiwan and I need to know if my criminal history will keep me from obtaining a visa.

I have a poss. of marijuana charge from over 5 years ago in which i got a deferred judgment on. So it's technically not a conviction. This was enough to deny me a work visa for S. Korea, but I am hoping Taiwan is less strict.

Also, the job offer is from Hess. Is there anything I should know about this company?

Thanks

Hess?

You might want to do a search on that company name, I've never heard of that one before. Seems sketchy.

Hi,

Having a criminal record does not stop you getting a work permit of visa for Taiwan. However, we at Hess do require you to provide us with a criminal background check. Please just let just know.

HunterORL23 - Big Wally's comments were said with, sigh, sarcasm. Don't read every comment anyone makes at face value.

Secondly, why does Hess get put down? Check out the threads on this site and then you'll appreciate the context.

Of course having a record will influence your prospective job offers. It will put you way on the bottom of the list for people being hired although there is probably no set rules preventing you from working. I'd recommend doing everything possible to prevent people from finding out about your criminal past. Even going so far as to legally changing your name before coming to the country. That way they will have virtually no way of tracking you down. It'll make your job search a lot easier.

Hess is fine. They have hundreds of teachers working at any one time and many are doing fine. A lot comes down to personality and how resourceful one is. There WILL be issues, but how one deals with it is the key. In all likelihood, you'll be fine at Hess.

As far as the criminal check goes, either a federal or local one will do. They pull up different info. (depending on the district) . The local ones can be had in a day or three for less than $25.
