Look up and in blue writing next to member list and above Log out. There is something called user groups. This has been there since I joined and when you click on it the same message always comes up. Go on. Do it now. What does it say? Anyone care to take up the challange and change this? |

I've clicked on this thingy before, and nothing has happened. So I tried again today and nothing continued to happen. What is a usergroup anyway? Isn't each one of the forums *technically* a usergroup?
So then I tried to set one up, ready to give it a witty and entertaining name, and I couldn't find any way to do so. Ho hum, back to work then I guess...
Have a good day.
Lozwich. |

Sorry LA. If you manage to sort it out you could call the user group. Living hell.
Mods, care to answer this one? What is it? |

Dear dmb,
Well, when all else fails, read the directions. I found this on the FAQ page:
What are Usergroups?
Usergroups are a way in which board administrators can group users. Each user can belong to several groups (this differs from most other boards) and each group can be assigned individual access rights. This makes it easy for administrators to set up several users as moderators of a forum, or to give them access to a private forum, etc.

How do I join a Usergroup?
To join a usergroup click the usergroup link on the page header (dependent on template design) and you can then view all usergroups. Not all groups are open access -- some are closed and some may even have hidden memberships. If the board is open then you can request to join it by clicking the appropriate button. The user group moderator will need to approve your request; they may ask why you want to join the group. Please do not pester a group moderator if they turn your request down -- they will have their reasons.

How do I become a Usergroup Moderator?
Usergroups are initially created by the board administrator who also assigns a board moderator. If you are interested in creating a usergroup then your first point of contact should be the administrator, so try dropping them a private message.

though I'm not so sure that clears up much, if any, of the mystery.
Regards,
John |

Why would board administrators want to group users? How would they they group users? Which group would you be in? |

Dear dmb,
Probably none - I'm not much of a "joiner" type.

Dear dmb,
Very nice of you to say so - but you know, cream isn't the ONLY thing that floats to the top.

It sounds a bit scary to me. Are there a whole load of other Dave's users out there on their own secret private forum? Reading our postings and talking about us? Who are they? Do they use funny handshakes? |

Dear bayabule,
You don't want to know, believe me. If I tell you, I'll have to kill you.

Stoooop! You're going to give me nightmares!
Hi Salmon,
Interesting you chose this thread to join in. Are you infiltrating from a secret usergroup?
Just kidding! Welcome. I only started a few weeks ago, and I think us newcomers just have to learn the hard way about etiquette. I was terrified at first. Don't worry about it, but religious rantings are best left to the regulars until you feel confident enough contribute if you wish. I'm glad I finally got up the courage to join in, it's been very entertaining.
Enjoy! |

Dear salmon,
Well, this pretty much says it all:
"ESL Cafe's Job Discussion Forum Rules & Policies
You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use ESL Cafe's Job Discussion Forum to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violative of any law. You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by ESL Cafe's Job Discussion Forum.
We at Dave's ESL Cafe reserve the right to delete any message for any or no reason whatsoever. You remain solely responsible for the content of your messages, and you agree to indemnify and hold harmless Dave's ESL Cafe (and ESL Cafe's Job Discussion Forum) and their agents with respect to any claim based upon transmission of your message(s).
All postings are archived and Dave's ESL Cafe reserves the right to re-post them on other sections of Dave's ESL Cafe, including the Job Information Journal.
Dave's ESL Cafe will delete postings which, in the moderator's judgment, are "off topic" (not concerned with ESL/EFL employment issues); are intended to defame or deride; contain vulgar or otherwise objectionable language; are written to inflame, not inform; are personal attacks directed toward another individual; are generalizations ('All X is bad because Y was not a good experience for me'); are intended to promote a private agenda rather than share ESL/EFL employment-related information; are based on hearsay rather than the poster's direct personal experience.
We at Dave's ESL Cafe also reserve the right to reveal your identity (or whatever information we know about you) in the event of a complaint or legal action arising from any message posted by you.
Please note that advertisements, chain letters, pyramid schemes, and solicitations are inappropriate in ESL Cafe's Job Discussion Forum."
But, if you're like me, you probably didn't give it much of a read when you signed up. Some of the terms - "vulgar" and "objectionable language" for example - are pretty subjective (as you may have noticed, there's a current thread dealing with "farting in the classroom", which, I guess, some might consider "vulgar"). I suppose the best suggestions I could make are:
1. Try to maintain a polite and considerate tone - even, or especially, when another poster's posting may rile you.
2. Make use of the "Preview" button a lot, at least at first.
3. If something gets you REALLY angry, wait a while and cool off a bit before replying.
4. Always remember - everyone's going to read your postings. You CAN use the Personal Message (PM) function to communicate privately with individual posters.
5. The moderators (usually, I think) will give you a warning if one of your postings "goes over the line" (I've received one).
So, welcome aboard. Bayabule offered some good advice: "Don't worry about it". Just jump on in.
Regards,
John |

Hi Salmon,
Welcome aboard.
To echo the others. and add a little
take it all with a pinch of salt, don't get too serious about a negative or non-response to your posts. like life posters can be nice and nasty and at times downright mean. generally speaking most of the posters are pretty good at taking the p**s and not losing their cool.
When they do, keep quiet and watch the sparks fly, see just what gets by the mods and what doesn't. |
