It will depend on your interviewers & how closely they follow the rules. There were new guidelines for interviews this year and CIR interviews were supposed to be conducted entirely in Japanese, covering reading, writing, listening, speaking, a written translation exercise, and a simultaneous translation exercise (J->E only). I know some of the consulates broke it up into a general interview in E&J and then a Japanese interview.
You're expected to be functionally fluent. You're not sounding like you are. |

IIRC there's usually ~30-45 Korean ALTs in Japan at any given point, including the Korean JET ALTs.  |

An online TESOL qualification is worthless for JET. Don't waste your money. |
I had a buddy that got a classroom TESOL qualification through San Diego State. He had been made an alternate in 2005 prior to getting this. When he re-applied in 2007 with this cert, he was shortlisted and sent off to Oita Prefecture. |

I was in a roundabout way telling the OP to take a classroom TESOL course in order to boost his qualifications for JET. |

| Well, I don't really have the money nor time to take a classroom certification program. An online certificate is cheap and if it boosts me a little during the hiring phase then it's worth it. I don't plan on being a teacher so I could care less about teaching and certification. If I did plan to be a teacher long term then of course I would consider a classroom program. |

Are you taking the online course for EPIK, SMOE, or GEPIK? I know at least EPIK will pay more if you are taking an online or classroom course. |

I don't work for a government program in Korea. I work for a private company 12pm-5pm and I am paid higher salary than GEPIK or SMOE, and I work in a public school
I can still raise my salary here but the catch is your need an online certificate before you sign your contract. |

Here is the breakdown of the JET Programme CIR intake for 2009-2010 (as of June 12, 2009); these are the expected numbers at Tokyo Post-Arrival Orientation A (end of July) and Tokyo Post-Arrival Orientation B (beginning of August). I am serving as an Orientation Assistant and have received these numbers in my Orientation Assistant Preparation Manual.
56 total new CIRs:
8 from Australia
3 from Canada
5 from France
2 from Germany
1 from Ireland
4 from New Zealand
6 from the UK
27 from the US
Needless to say, this number is much lower than the 159 CIRs who arrived in 2008. The application process is indeed becoming more and more competitive.

My speculation (and remember that it is onl just that) is that local governments and other international organizations needed fewer CIRs this year due to budget cuts. |

I didn't receive any figures for the number of applications received by JET for the 2009-2010 term; I have only received this summer's intake numbers.
Likewise, I second cvmurrieta's speculation. I presume that fewer CIRs were needed/hired for 2009-2010. Couple this with the possibility that more CIRs re-contracted for 2009-2010 than for previous years. Finally, I shall also speculate that the number of applications to JET for ALT and CIR positions has not decreased from past years.

This is kind of random, but I was wondering if anyone knows if CIR positions are also available through Interac or other places aside from JET? And where do we look / how to apply to those CIR positions?
