|
|
Hi all.
I have been offered a position in Guangzhou at a government school. The working hours are 20 per week and includes accommodation. I'm a recent graduate from a UK university with 3 months teaching experience (in computer skills not English) and no tefl cert. This is only supposed to be a working gap year for me.
Now I know there are more qualified and experienced teachers so I don't want to come across as greedy especially considering my background. Also I have found that many schools in major cities require some teaching experience. As I want to be based in a major city such as Guangzhou is 3000 rmb per month a good offer for a first timer?
A copy of the contract can be found here:

Many thanks. |

3000 is as stated above, especially with 20 hours. Numerous other issues, such as cost of living to consider. If your just passing time for a year, might not be too bad. |

You'd be making 5.50 USD an hour on a generous conversion (could get more at McDonald's). Also, you would be in one of the most expensive places in China. 8,000 RMB is low there. Take a great big pass on this, and maybe let them know that it is horrible to be offering such crap. |

Thats a pretty bad deal mate ... and I note the accomodation is dorm accom too ... That is also far from ideal. I couldnt see any reason to accept this contract.
Some of the more desirable locations may have lower salaries, some jobs in the more remote places may also offer lower salaries. Working in big noisy dirty cities like GZ should pay much more .. cost of living can be much higher too. |

No! That is nonsense, last year I came to GZ with no teaching experience, only a 2-year-degree and no TEFL. I still managed to get a job paying 12000rmb a month (including housing allowance). Reject this offer. |

If you take this offer, you will be making the person who hired you very rich, for he will be pocketing the 4000-10000y differential (the amount allocated to hire a foreign teacher)....
Out of respect for others here, and yourself, reject this pittance... |

That is quite reassuring. Would you recommend me just going out there and offering my services to schools to avoid recruiters? I understand I may have to do a visa run before accepting a job. Will it be more difficult for me because I am Chinese? I understand a lot of Cantonese although my speaking is quite poor.
I read that I may have more luck if I were to look for work just before the academic year starts. Is this the case in GZ and are teachers in short supply there? |

I think the opposite is true. The longer you wait, the greater the chances will be that schools have already filled their quota for foreign teachers. |

The poster mentioned, incidentally, that he/she is Chinese. That could very well account for the low salary offer.
As a foreigner, I'm very familar with the Chinese position that if I won't pay an exorbitant price, they won't sell to me.
It could be the same for a Chinese "foreigner." If he/she declines the low salary--no job. As a matter of principle, they may oppose paying "one of their own" fairly. |
