I left the country when I did a flit a few yrs. ago. But what if I simply wanted to take a job in a different province? What's your opinion? I know the stuff like they cancel your visa.

This area's quite hard on a person's health & I could legitimately leave. Classes haven't started and I'd rather avoid the red tape if possible, just ease out the door...to another place.

Thanks.

How does your contract allow you to legitimately leave?

I'll add my opinion here.

Runners make all FTs in China look bad. The next person this school tries to hire will have a more difficult time with this school, as this school will be more careful in the future. This may mean lower wages for the next person. If they paid for your visa expenses, how do they get this back when you leave them hanging like that? As of last year, I think, some things related to foreign experts are now kept track of with a central computer. How do you expect to get a new visa without recommendation letters and release letter from your last contract? You might be in for a surprise, or you might be lucky. However, you'll add to the bad perspective that some Chinese have about foreigners in this country and ultimately you will hurt everyone here to some extent.

My advice is to talk it out with the people you have the contract with and try to find some compromise. I don't think it's ever commendable to promise something to someone and then just break your word, but that's just my opinion.

I quit my first job here after 3 months. There were no problems from the school I was leaving as I kept them informed of my progress looking around for different jobs.

However, as I had a Z visa, they canceled that, and I was given a 10 day L visa. My new school promptly sent me off to HK.

In mental health circles, what "Cubism" is doing is asking for permission. He knows doing a "runner" is irresponsible, so he wants his "peers" to tell him it is "OK." Then he can seduce young women, smoke, and get drunk to deal with his already defiled conscience.

Save your typing fingers. He is likely to do his own will anyway.

Boo hoo, the place is not too good for your health. That's a legitimate reason for leaving?

Eating excess meat, drinking alcohol, and using tobacco, not to mention bangin hoez isn't good for your health either. Going to do a runner on those too?

edit: changed "****" to "irresponsible."

I guess it's just like the words a soldier may use in Afghanistan or a firefighter in the middle of an inferno or rescue workers battling against the elements in Taiwan right now:

"This area's quite hard on a person's health & I could legitimately leave. "

Or maybe that's a legitimate reason not to go there in the first place!

What a horrible comparison between a fire fighter and Cubism pulling a runner. Why the emotional appeals to prove your point when Cube already knows the inherent wrongness of breaking his contract?

If it was me I'd be asking myself what I stand to gain and loose. If the new job might pay more, but it brings a whole set of unknowns. Will you get paid on time, will you get good housing, will you get treated well by the school, and so on and so forth.

If the new job is that much better and you have no compelling reason to hang around then do the runner. I wouldn't be held to a contract that your school probably has no problem tearing up the first time they feel like it.

You aren't holding up the image of FTs in China, but you are holding up your own. If pulling a runner can be done with out damaging that image and reputation then have at it.

I'd be cautious though... very cautious.

At least offer to work out your notice ... they need to find a replacement!
