hello mrs. lizziebennet,

in our infamous travels through the kingdom there have been a couple of things or twos that we have learned.

We over packed and brought to many unnecessary items of clothing and other miscellaneous pieces.

you will not need most of the shoes that you think you will need. a pair of runners, dress shoes for class (but must be comfortable too), and sandals. summer clothing think tropical. and pack your stuff in a bigger suitcase than necessary, you will accumulate.

While the boys play... Laughing I'll give you rather my standard advice as to what I found that I needed. I always took sheets and my pillow because I am picky - most people can find something acceptable there. For the kitchen, I had a rubbermaid (sheet) cake holder (don't know if they even have them any more, but you know the size I mean) and in it I put all my favorite kitchen gadgets and basics. Most of the things I carried about are still in my kitchen now.

It wasn't clear if you are teaching or accompanying your teacher husband. As to shoes, I agree with Grendal. Bring walker/runners, one pair of dress shoes, and both casual and work style sandals. I wore sandals all year for teaching.

Favorite cosmetics... OTC medications if you are choosy. If you are the type that buys whatever is on sale, you will likely find it in KSA. Check to make sure any of your prescription meds are available there... most are.

Yes, I am American... (see under my avatar) but I have to admit that I have never baked cookies... or a cake... or anything else. But, I do eat now and again. Cool Mostly it is the stuff I need because I am such a bad cook.

Oh... you can wear make-up... many of the students put it on with a trowel. They would probably be appalled if you didn't wear any... and they will critique the application of what you do put on. Remember, they cover it up when they go out the door. Since you will not, I would think conservative make-up would be best.

Can't help you with teaching materials as it may depend on your employer... and what level you will be teaching.

There is all brands of makeup available here, and I am sure I have seen ads for MAC. I am sure some light makeup is allowed for female instructors, after all, you will only be dealing with females. As one female teacher said on this site just a few days ago: "The girls here put on more makeup in one day just on their eyes than I will use any makeup my whole life."

And that is true in general. However, the amount of makeup visible in public will be less than what is visible in the East and West of the country, but only because more women will have their faces covered in public, not because they will use any less makeup.

Yes but intelligence and curiosity are considered preexisting conditions.

vs,

i had a tidy bin o' kitchen basics nestled in with bedding but placed all in storage after all the static about taking too much....sigh.

the point of OTC meds is of interest to me. i haven't figured out how to research what types of meds KSA pharmacies carry.

anyone? Razz

thx,
xo

Dear leez,

Here are some sites that may help; I can't vouch for their accuracy, however, as I hardly ever frequented pharmacies in the Kingdom.

http://www.justlanded.com/english/Saudi-Arabia/Saudi-Arabia-Guide/Health/Medicines

http://americanbedu.com/2009/08/01/pharmacies-in-saudi-arabia/

(also read the "Responses")

Here's a list of "controlled medicines" for the UAE, which from what I hear, is now similar to what's controlled in Saudi.

http://www.gulfnews.com/images/06/11/14/controlleddrugslist.pdf

When I was there, I was told that a fair number of "prescription meds" were available over the counter (Prozac was often mentioned), but I don't know if the regulations have gotten tighter since 2003.)

Regards,
John
