I'm planning to stay in Indonesia for all of March & April of next year - primarily to study Indonesian. However, it would be great if I could pick up some work there (f/t or p/t) to cover some of my expenses.

Is it possible to get short term gigs to make a bit of scratch in the major cities?

I've got a TEFL cert, bachelor's, master's (in an unrelated subject), and close to three year's of teaching experience (Korea, China, Australia).

What are my chances?

Sure, it's possible. I doubt the 3 month contract though. Get in touch with the language schools before arriving. Let them you know you'll be available for part time work. Then contact them again when you're here. Probably best not to mention the relatively short amount of time you'll be in town though. Many schools will pay cash in hand to part timers filling in the empty slots due to illness etc. Depending on where you're living, advertising for privates is also a possibility.

You need to research your visa requirements too. As far as I know 60 days is the most for a social visa (tourist visa) before having to leave the country. You need to apply for that before arriving into the country.

It's half right.
The Social Budaya visa isn't necessarily a 6 month visa...

1. It has to applied for and obtained at an Embassy outside of Indonesia, with a sponsorship letter from an Indonesian. this sponsorship letter is best to follow a format... there are examples on www.livinginindonesiaforum.org

2. It's initially valid for 2 months but can be extended a month at a time up to a total of 6 months by applying in the same area as your original sponsor. Immigrasi does not HAVE to grant extensions. I have known people to be refused because there was some suspicion they might be working or even volunteering. Which necessitated a sudden run to get a new one with a different sponsor or a different kind of visa eg a 2 month tourist visa. the cost for this is 250.000rs a time, plus agent fees if you want to use one, to make things easier for yourself

3. does not allow you to work, so it you are sponsored by a school it might look dodgy. To get around this some organisations get you sponsored by a private individual eg the receptionist.

4. each time you apply for an extension you will not have your passport for a number of weeks as immigrasi/agents take their own sweet time. This really gave me the pip. On the second extension you will need to visit Imigrasi and have fingerprints, signature and photo taken for a central database.

but it is illegal to work on tourist, social, and business visas. the only way to work legally in indonesia is on the 1 year KITAS. they cost the school a lot of money and they wouldnt be interested in sponsoring u for 2/3 months. any school that is willing to hire u is dodgy and not concerned about your welfare should immigration pick u up. also, u cannot open a bank account with a KITAS.

social visa is different from tourist visa. tourist visa is a visa on demand for 30 days for a fee of 25 dollars. no sponsorship needed. as newgabe said, u need sponsorship for the social visa. if u are studying music at a school, they should be able to provide the sponsorship. if u are just hangin out and jamming, u will need to find a person or organization to do this for u. one place is okusi.net. they are a little more expensive than other places, but most people that i know that have used them have been happy and no hidden costs.

I assume you mean 'WITHOUT a KITAS', and not 'WITH a KITAS.'

Also, if you start out with the 30-day visa ON ARRIVAL you CANNOT extend it! You can only extend your visa if you start out with a 60-day visa BEFORE arrival.

The easiest way I know of to get the 60-day visa before arrival is go to Penang, Malaysia. You go to the consulate there and drop off your passport with 2 photos, airfare ticket, $50, and its all ready the very next morning to pick up!!!!
