| Yes, Jack London still is an approved writer with excellent socialist credentials. Yet Dumas' Three Musketeers or even Conan Doyle's Holmes seem to have the edge, despite writing novels supporting or set in reactionary societies. I haven't figures that out yet. Dunno about the suicide rate here or seasonal affective depression or disorder thingies. If you include massive alcohol-related deaths as suicide, then it might be considered high here too, and that's not including the teachers. |

Why don't you speak Russian? Can you at least read the alphabet?
A friend of mine worked in Russia for a year; he met a guy there (TEFLer) that after 12 years there couldn't speak more than a sentence AND couldn't read the alphabet... |

| Nowhere near as good as your German, I'd hazzard. Although I could be fibbing and be a local after all....In any case, I have never heard of anyone here for even 12 weeks who couldn't read the alphabet. Why? |

I don't know Russian but if I were living there for a long period of time I would do my best to acquire it as fast as possible. |

Dear Deicide,
"I don't know Russian but if I were living there for a long period of time I would do my best to acquire it as fast as possible."
Would this be an example of, "Fools Russian . . . . . . . ?"

Dear Deicide,
Good thing I'm up on British English. Of COURSE, I'm taking the piss.
Why, I would kill my dear departed mother for the chance to make a bad pun. In fact I'd kill her even before she bore me (and she not only bore me, she frequently bored me as well, bless her.)
Regards,
John |

| I will have to say this about ASia in general. YES; the English on signs, t shirts, etc is laughable, but how many of us could write something in perfect Chinese, Korean, Japanese? |
After >6 years of studies in JHS, HS, and college, I think many of us would be able to do it far better than the "Engrish" we see pass muster on T-shirts and signs, menus, etc..
That's the amount of time spent by Japanese, anyway, but their motivation and style of education negates any real sense of learning English. |

Glenski, that kind of supports my ideas about teachers who have taught in Asia, and how their experience transfers to North America or Europe. Students here are more demanding, have more practical daily need to communicate in English (and don't want to be laughed at), and simply are more sophisticated in that they very often are functional in multiple languages (Europe, I mean, not NA on this point).
I like my occasional group of Asian students very much in terms of their being hardworking and overt wishes to please, but underneath this veneer, I wonder to what degree they are really interested in the USE of other languages....
Of course, the same criticism could even more easily be made of many native English speakers! |
