Yes, Jack London still is an approved writer with excellent socialist credentials. Yet Dumas' Three Musketeers or even Conan Doyle's Holmes seem to have the edge, despite writing novels supporting or set in reactionary societies. I haven't figures that out yet. Dunno about the suicide rate here or seasonal affective depression or disorder thingies. If you include massive alcohol-related deaths as suicide, then it might be considered high here too, and that's not including the teachers.

Glenski, that kind of supports my ideas about teachers who have taught in Asia, and how their experience transfers to North America or Europe. Students here are more demanding, have more practical daily need to communicate in English (and don't want to be laughed at), and simply are more sophisticated in that they very often are functional in multiple languages (Europe, I mean, not NA on this point).

I like my occasional group of Asian students very much in terms of their being hardworking and overt wishes to please, but underneath this veneer, I wonder to what degree they are really interested in the USE of other languages....

Of course, the same criticism could even more easily be made of many native English speakers!
