So... how do you feel about the Ak party sweeping through the elections like so many mustached Lords of the Ring? Here in Kayseri, they got 73%. The funny thing is, even my friends who dont agree with them at all politically say they respect them because they actually get the job done instead of just yakking, and also, they are 'clean' (i take that to mean scandal free).
I bring this up because my mother called the other night, quite worried, because the way it is being reported in the N. American media is that the fundamentalists aretaking over Turkey, with Al Qaeda being the next logical step.

I have definitely been out of turkey for toooooooo long. Yaramaz, you used the words 'clean' and 'politics' in the same sentence. Things haven't changed that much in the 18 months I've been away, surely? Are there any other major changes that I should be made aware of that have happened in this time period? I'm not going to go through this reverse culture shock thing I keep reading about, am I? |

To be honest, I was quite suspicious when I heard the words 'clean' and 'honest' and so forth used re: politicians as well... hence my posting. I was hoping y'all knew something the my friends and I dont know. I polled a wide variety of people andalthough most of my friends disagreed wholeheartedly with their platform they thought they were pretty trustworthy compared with the other options.
Eeek.
Going to go don me headscarf now that the Aks have won the majority in my town... |

Yaramaz, you're doing it again. I can sort of get used to the idea of 'clean' and 'politics' in the same sentence but 'trustworthy'??? I know Turkey is a land of paradoxes but surely you are now dalga geciyor The next time I ask for a doner kebab will there be any meat in it? |

Most of Turkey seems keen to join the EU (God knows why, but thereby hangs another thread). Until recently it looked almost impossible, but now, the party with the mostest (acceptible to Europeans) is also the party with the "fundamentalist" lable.
Does not compute but is happening. This country is truly an enigma.
That's why I like it. It's interesting. So far the AK party hasn't forced anyone into headscarves. Will they? My hunch is no.

Several of my students have said the exact same thing! And it does seem that things are actually happening. The new councillor for Istanbul has declared that he is going to pedestrianize the whole of the Old Town from Laleli to Sultanahmet, construct an underground system and put a train link across the Bosphorus. I don't know about all those, but I have noticed more public works getting under way in the last year or two.
The only thing that does concern me is that too many people are spinning the same line about the AKP being doers. The populous here do have a tendency to reguritate opinions from the TV rather than make their own minds up. However, there are signs of things happening, so let's be positive.

I think people here are just so afraid that an Islamic state will be made. Of course this wont happen. People are paranoid. I think Ak is doing a better job of running the country. Let's face it, it could do with some honest - ish politicians for a change! But no one will ever replace the Ataturk principles and I dont believe that AK is trying to do that anyway! |

Indeed, welcome aboard the Ataboy Express! We're a bit less exciting now that ghost has flown away (read: fewer battles to the death) but its always a jolly place to come home to.
My Bataturk-radar picked up a B'At signal (that would be Curiosity Bey, dmb) indicating you needed help with your avatar... I am lazy so I'll just cut and paste the advice I gave in the general section. If you want the whole post with the info, go to the Avatar thread.
How to get a nice picture by your name:
find nice picture on the internet
right click mouse
scroll down to bottom, to Properties
Copy address in properties, or at the very least jot it down
Paste or type URL in the appropriate spot in profile page.
Kolay gelsin! |
