I would really like to talk to someone now. I don't like this set up at all. The employee (potential employee) has to pay out way too much just to work for them. They don't reimburse you for the plane ticket either, which seems beyond unfair. That provisional employee offer seems to be a crock too. I want to hear back from some Heart employees on this and how it played out. Why bring in so many people, especially during a recession, just to have to send some of them back home?

*Sighs* Why can't I find a halfway decent job whether it's here or overseas?

If it's reimbursed airfare you want, try Korea or China.

Virtually 0% of the companies in Japan pay for airfare anymore. That said Korea they will pay for that and your housing and probably China too. Japan just has a more developed ELT market and because an employee can skip out of a job with their new shiny visa (the employer doesn't own your visa) they have learned not to trust.

There's a huge amount of trust that goes in to getting employment with a dispatch in Japan these days. You pretty much pay all the costs to get there and set up and until you get a steady stream of pay checks you don't really know if you made the right decision.

In your case, decide whether you trust them enough to go over and give it a shot. You can also apply to the other dispatches to cover your bases. Make sure you get a COE from them if you can. This will protect you if things go belly up as you will be able to get a visa and work right away.

Finally, know this, ignorance is bliss. I have done a lot of research on ELT and to be honest the more I know the more worried I get. I think you have to keep yourself intentionally ignorant a little. Otherwise, you will find yourself over thinking things, worrying and perhaps chickening out. Now I am not referring to total ignorance; just know when to stop, ok. Trust me things will go smoother. (You may want to PM PaulH or Glenski or someone in the know about Japan and just ask their general opinion of Japan and the job market - they are in the know about these things and what they say is pretty much on the money to some extent.)

Hm, just thought of another question. Do Recruiters help with getting you set up with banks? I don't have one here, as I used a Credit Union, so I know that's not internationally recognized. Which banks are?

Citibank is. But some employers have their own selected banks and may not let you use what you want.

I totally forgot about Citibank. Thanks for the information. I should take a look at the handbook again to see if it mentioned anything about banking.
