JZ, you could earn 10,000 a month but you will be doing the same hours as you would here in Taiwan (for that I'd expect a 30 hour week or close to it). However, since I've never worked in China I can only go by what I see posted in the job ads. Sure, people say they earn so much doing privates, but privates aren't a sure thing. Most jobs in China will pay, as yama mentioned, 6k - 8k a month but that does include free housing. I do not believe China is the cash cow many want it to be. Damn, I hope I am wrong. Because then Rooster will finally be able to make some decent money there and I'd leave Taiwan in a flash. However, from everything I've seen online I would be no better off in China than in Taiwan.

30 hours of work in China would pay around 80,000NT.

Free housing and return air is great but it doesn't put food in your fridge. I just took a quick look at a couple of job boards - including Dave's - just to make sure I'm not giving shoddy advice (ahem JZ'er) and this is what I found if you eliminate the ones asking for teaching credentials or MA's:

University in Xiangtan, Hunan .. Start Date: March 2010 .. Qualifications: English Native Speakers + BA .. Teaching Hour: 18 classes per week .. Salary: 4,000-4,500RMB/month .. Travel Allowance : 2200 RMB/ year .. Accommodation Provided : Yes

A 10 months contract 6000RMB monthly with 10 positions available in the north and south of China immediately

One Year 25 Hrs./Wk. Salary 6,200 RMB/month Hours/Week 25 Teaching Days/Wk 5 OT 100 RMB/hr for over 25 hours per week Completion Bonus 8,000RMB Medical Insurance Yes Paid Vacation 2 weeks

One Year 20 Hrs/Wk Salary 5,000 RMB/month Hours/Week 20 Teaching Days/Wk 4 OT 100 RMB/hr for over 20 hours per week Completion Bonus 4,000RMB Medical Insurance Yes Paid Vacation 2 weeks

Inner Mongolia - 6,000-8,000RMB + Airfare + Allowance + Low Hours (Start February) The school is a state high school, located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's Capital IHuhhot.
We offer one teaching positions in Inner mongolia, starting February 2010.

Eastern Star Foreign Studies College is looking for highly qualified English teachers for our expanding business.
1. Salary:4500-8500 RMB (dependent on qualification)
2.Housing:Free and Furnished
3.Air Ticket will be reimbursed after completion of contract
a. 6 month contract C 3000 RMB
b. 12 month contract C 6000 RMB

I've no idea where JZ'er got the basis for his ludicrous comment but these are jobs available right now that don't require teaching credentails (B.Ed) M.As etc. These are the types of jobs that Rooster will be qualified for and typical wages that he should expect.

Let me get this straight.
You're saying that 30 hours a week, working in CHINA will pay 80,000 NT?

Are you aware that 80,000 NT = 16,973 RMB?

Are you SERIOUS?

You're so wrong it's not even funny. Are you sitting at home trying to decide what the most insane comment you can possibly come up with is?

This is absolutely unsubstantiated, ludicrous, nonsense.
Find me a job that pays that much per month in China without teaching qualifications, a PhD an M.A or working in an International School and I'll eat my words.

Are you so obsessed with trying to appear knowledgeable that you are willing to provide people with fallacious, misleading 'information' and try to argue its veracity?

What am I saying?
Of couse you are.

Actually the most realistic estimate is 14,000. You could easily make 18,000 if you did not need a visa and some people actually do that by making border runs every so many months.

14,000 a month is one university job 12-15 hours a week and 6 hours on Saturday and Sunday.

One could work a university job and possibily work nights but the websites for cities like Hangzhou seem to advertise most for teachers on Saturdays and Sundays.

Anyways, 14,000RMB for 30 hours a week is very reasonable. And yes, there are people working freelance and earning 18,000RMB.

To start with basing your advice on what is posted on the job forums on Dave's is clearly shoddy advice.

If we were going to use Dave's as a reference, then one would assume there are almost no ESL teaching jobs in Taiwan. Most jobs in Taiwan are not posted on Dave's. See the trend.

The links you sent my by PM are as follows

1:Teaching Position: English Teacher (UK and USA are preferred)
Number of positions: 5
Level of Institution: English School
Time to start: ASAP

The position is with a top quality English School and the conditions are:
10000RMB/ month
20 x 60 minute classes per week
Position Requirements-Minimum of a Bachelor ?/SPAN>TEFL and 2 years experience

2:Job Description:
Create an english environment on the lesson
Simple communicate with children from 1 to 6 years old and their parents
1-10 hours per week, times may very slightly depending on the rearrangement of the schedule

Qualifications:
Female, 18-40 years old
Native Speaker from Canada, US, UK, Australia, New Zealand
Be interested in kid-teaching field
Salary Scales:
150-200 RMB per hour, It depends on your teaching experience and your teaching competence.

So the first one is 10000 for 20 hours a week and requires B.A, 2 years experience and TEFL, which flies in the face of your statement that anyone can make 10000 isf they want to work more than 12 hours a week.

The second one is for a female - Rooster are you a female between the ages of 18 - 40? Didn't think so.

Where is this mythical job that will pay almost 17000 Rmb for 30 hours JZ'er? Still waiting for you to produce that one - better not hold my breath though eh?

I have issue with the statement you made suggesting that anyone can make 10000 Rmb if they aren't lazy and want to work more than 12 hours a week. Of course jobs exist for more than 6000 Rmb, of course if you want to work weekends you can make more money, but Rooster doesn't. He wants weekends off so he can visit his girlfriend.

My point is that you make it sound like 10000 is a wage that anyone who wants to work more than 12 hours a week can easily acheive and you have provided me with no evidence to support that statement.

I didn't only use Dave's JZ'er. Let me reiterate.

I took a quick look at a couple of job boards - including Dave's

As one of the largest ESL dedicated resources on the internet, I'd be very surprised if people didn't occasionally come here to look for jobs and my aim wasn't to find the best jobs or the most jobs, it was to get a general overview of what was available.

It certainly is. Trouble is I'd be very surprised if Rooster could find a job paying that much without an M.A or PhD. University jobs typically don't pay that much more than a regular teaching gig in China, for candidates with average qualifications.

Case in point:

1:ESL Teachers needed in linfen city, Shanxi Province,if you want to experience the great cultures, Never miss it. We are looking for 2 Teachers, whose Native Language is English, willing to teach in linfen city, Shanxi at the coming semester 2010

The Benefit package for ESL Teachers includes:
one year Contract
Salary: 4500RMB/Month,depending on teaching experience and educational
Teaching load & schedule: 16 teaching periods per week
Round-trip travel for one-year contract is provided
A rent-free, fully furnished apartment for Living room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.

2:Jonathan Education Consulting
Email Address [email protected]
Message JECI Code: 552
School Type: public
School Level: college & university
Location: Qufu city Shandong Province
Benefits:
Monthly Salary 4500RMB/M
Travel Allowance 2000RMB/Y
International Travel 8000RMB/Y

Please stop making broad generalizations based on assumptions and your opinion of 'how the world should be'. Unless it's based in fact or relevant to Rooster's situation, qualifications and preferred work schedule it's useless and misleading.
