Hello,
Hope you've all had a good day today. This is my first time posting on this forum, though I've been lurking for the better part of 6 months. I am looking for a position in the Middle East to spice up my life a bit. I've visited SA and Egypt for roughly a month each so I am familiar with the people and "customs".
I've been offered a position at a private school in Riyadh to teach Biology. I have a BS, taken and passed the TX Life Science subject area test and two years teaching experience in US public schools (I've started and ran a SAT tutoring business for 4 years with my family but I doubt this experience counts for anything) but do not have a standard teaching certificate. I can't provide professional references as I've lost contact with my old colleagues. I am not Caucasian.
The offer is:
9000 SAR/month
20000 SAR per annum for housing
Medical insurance
One round trip ticket for (2 adults and 2 children) per year
The contract lasts for a three year period.
The next school year begins 18th Sept 2010 and ends June 2011.
When asked if the salary is Negotiable -The salary will be in the range mentioned earlier but it can increase at the end of the year depending on teacher performance.
Your advise would be appreciated. |

Well, I'd say with the mounds of experience (One month!) that you have in saudi that makes you familiar with the people, "customs"...and I assume morays, how could any of us give you any useful "advise"!

Dear Seditious,
Well, it's a pretty low salary and housing allowance. But with the qualification and experience you mentioned, that may be about as good as it gets.
Regards,
John |

You rang.*Lurch
Postwise...You seem to be asking two things. Is the offer competitive and what are your chances? Not having a current certification skews the former but it's difficult finding people willing to enter into such a long contract for so little money, relatively, increasing your chances. |

I probably could have worded that a little better. I sought to avoid/minimize the "kingdom of pain" references that would've inevitably make it's way here. I have had many years of dealing with my Middle Eastern brethren and am well versed in their ways (those great, good, idiotic and down right bad). I am not acquainted with the current job climate and the types of offers that are floating around in Saudi Arabia. I'd also appreciate advise on housing and what I can expect to find for 20,000 SAR a year in a good neighborhood ( I am single).
You, however, zeroed in on one aspect of my query. As the title of the thread might indicate, I was looking for advise on the offer vs qualifications or lack thereof. I do thank you in spite of your snappiness... since your posting here my lure the queen and the angry puppy. |
