They might. They might not. If they do, you may know about it outright, or it may be in subtle things (like poor grades in performance reviews with nebulous reasons).
Or they may simply not renew your contract.

I agree. Japan is a country that values the face image of things. Image and impressions are everything. Get caught in a lie, and who is to say what the employer may think about you, your nationality, and subsequent teachers? They may do nothing, or they may put in lots of legalese in future contracts, plus spread the word that X is unreliable (you personally, or others of your nationality).

Good point, whether one has a good reason or not for wanting Osaka, simply because the market is so full of teachers and wannabes these days, it is probably wise to consider just getting one's foot in the door. |

See I wanted to be placed with my job as close to Nagoya as possible because of my boyfriend who lives there. BUT I was advised not to use that as a reason to why i want to get placed in a specific area because that area may not be available and I wanted to HAVE a job in Japan. If you limit yourself to only one place or only big cities, you may not even get a placement. They usually give the more popular places to experienced people first. I may have not been placed close to Nagoya, but since I am getting experience AND studying Japanese, I have a better chance of transfering to where i want to go next year if I get a new contract. So I am not angry being far away from my boyfriend, but I AM happy to have a job IN Japan and teaching some amazing kids and getting experience which is way more important.
Lying is never a good idea in Japan. Especially if you are expecting to stay for a long period of time. You should just keep your options open and take what they give you. Your new, You probably don't know the language OR culture very well. |

If you're not willing to tell us why you want to go to Osaka, then I'm not willing to help you. I actually do have some pretty good info that could help you.
Perhaps you can PM me. |

The way i see it, it's none of our bloody business why the OP wants to go to Osaka, and I find the insistence on knowing his reasons to be confusing at best, and slightly sinister at worst.
Does it really matter? Seriously? |

Hello my name is Joe Pilfer. I am willing to lie, cheat, and steal; please advise on the best method for obtaining a teaching position in ABC location.
The OP is on the wrong website and in the wrong field. They should join an organized crime ring. |

Thank you (and thanks to lenoreelux) People just want to get on their high horse and tell me my reason for wanting to go to Osaka is stupid or never going to happen and that I should just suck it up and take whatever I can get because we all know the ESL market is impossible to get a job in, blah blah blah.
Nobody cares about what morals you have or how awful I am for wanting to present my potential employer with BS. Does the topic of this post ask "should I lie"? Does it ask "what happens if I lie and get caught?" Does it ask "what do you think about people who lie to employers?"
No. So either answer my question or I suggest you save your fingers and quit replying with off-topic answers that I'm just going to scroll on by. |

No. Where did you get that?

Some people here have delusions of gradeur. You haven't given us any hint of that, or any reason to think so. You might want to tone down your anger.

Not impossible but darned hard right now. If you tell us more about yourself, we could address that, but that wasn't the point of this thread.

Well, you're wrong when you say nobody cares about your morals. You got responses addressing that pretty much right way in this thread. Are you surprised? I mean, you did start with this:
I don't care if it's a lie or not, I'm fine with bullshitting people.
You've been told some answers. Is there something about the possible ones you don't like?
Wanna lie?
"I have a close relative, very close friend, or fiance in Osaka."
"There is a special one-of-a-kind dojo/ikebana teacher/potter/swordmaker/dye master/etc. only in Osaka, where I'd like to practice."
"I used to live in Osaka and felt it was the closest thing to home in Japan."
Take your pick. Go ahead and lie. Next questions? |

My own approach, were I lucky enough to get a job offer in Japan, would be to take whatever they were willing to offer, even if it was a placement in some Godforsaken dying town in Iwate-ken.
After all, Japan isn't that big, and with the Shinkansen and all, an occasional weekend in Osaka wouldn't be out of the question.
Being in-country would put me closer to the gaijin teacher grapevine, and I would spend my off-hours looking for a place to land when my initial contract was up. (In my case, I'd look for something within an hour's train ride from Tokyo.)
By the way, unless you're planning to join the yakuza as an apprentice chinpira, I can't imagine anything that is so hush-hush that you couldn't tell the truth. |

That is a bit of a brave boast to make. I'm guessing you have never lived in some of the more remote locdations on offer in Japan before.
I know an ALT who doesn't drive and lives 2.5 hours walk from the nearest train station, which is most certainly not a shikansen station and has a very poor service. The occasional weekend trip to Tokyo is often out of the question despite them only being a couple of prefectures away. So also far more difficult to get in touch with other foreigners, network and to land a different job for the following year (if your current location makes attending interviews else where near impossible without taking lots of time off)
And then don't get me started about the infamous Tokyo Islands! |

OP, this is coming from someone who hasn't taught in Japan (YET! 2 more weeks!), but why not live out in the Inaka for a year, get some teaching experience, work on your Japanese, then look for a position in Osaka the next year? You could look at your first year as a year of preparation before you make the big move to Osaka. I'm sure Osaka would be much more enjoyable after being able to speak some Japanese and having some teaching experience.
Regardless, I strongly recommend you stay away from lying, especially in an interview. In my experience, people who lie in the interview are almost always found out. |

| For the Osaka ben. And a chance to do some stand up and eventually form a manzai duo. Then you use that as a springboard to some tarento gigs and a spot in the gallery on variety shows. A couple pop albums later and you retire to occasional guest appearances on food shows and fashion spreads in luxury goods magazines. It all starts in Osaka. |
