Hi,

I was wondering if there is any agencies/or reqruiters( other than JET) who could organise me a job in a specific area of Japan, from outside of the country?

I am predicting a florish of replies saying "do the hard work yourself" and yes I intend to. However, I am open to the idea of paying someone to locate me in a specific area.

Thanks.

The only way to get a job in a specific location is to interview and get hired by a smaller company in that area. These do not tend to have the means to hire from abroad.

It is really only the big dispatch agencies and eikawa chains that normally recruit overseas and they can never guarentee any locations/positions. They bring you in to fill what positions they have avaliable. They can't tell you in advance where they have positions.

And if you are looking for a location in or around one of the major cities, you are wasting your time interviewing with most of the overseas recruiters who normally offer the indemand locations to resignees then to in-country new recruits then anything left will get given to overseas recruits who meet special requirements, in that order.

Some smaller chains (like James English School in northern Honshu) have a region-specific focus.

Otherwise, you're just going to have to do a lot of legwork, as you wrote. Might help us to know where you want to go. And why.

Keep in mind the glut of teachers out there now. You really shouldn't be too fussy about location.

I'm looking for work in the Tokushima region, or anywhere in Shikoku.

Why? because my partner has a JET position there. While this limits my job options, it does mean i have fewer worries about accomodation, etc. So I guess I am not 'desperate' as such, but rather limited. [/quote]

Well that's hardly the most sort after location. Of course overseas recruiters can only offer you a position there if something becomes avaliable, but if you tell them why you want to be out there... you'd probably be doing the employer a favour by requesting that area especially if you are able to add that you would accept a rural assignment. One of the other Interac ALTs in my city was transferred up here because this is where their JET partner is placed... so it isn't impossible.

Otherwise you are going to have to head over there to job hunt. You do have the advantage of your partner being over there in advance. They can scope out the area. And if they hear of any jobs going they can drop in your CV and get back to you immediately if the employer is interested in taking the next step.
And already having a place to stay and somebody in country that can act as your contact should you not be around if the employers want to get in touch is a huge plus. Not to mention the costs and hassle you save on not having to find a place to stay and your partner having internet and a phone number if you come over to job hunt

Tokushima is not the most sought-after location, but it doesn't have a very large population either so the number of jobs there will be pretty limited. Worth a try however.

I assume that the whole market vs population is relative. For example, there are more people in Tokyo, more jobs, but equally if not more competition.

That is about the score of it. But that's not to say there won't be competition for jobs; there will be but it's unlikely to be as extreme as in Tokyo or Osaka.

JET is not an "agency/recruiter" in any meaningful sense. Your first job is to understand the market and who the players are.

Sorry I don't understand the relevence of this at all. Am I not posting a blog to get an 'understanding of the market'? Lets not waste time stating the obvious. Would it not be more effiecent if you just shared some of these 'players' you talk so vaguelly about?

While somewhat blunt, there was a point being made about using google, the search function, lurking, etc... Many common questions can be answered by searching effectively prior to asking questions. The point being stated above, although it could be better expressed, is that it is important to know the programs and companies involved so that when you do ask a question, you ask a more specific and more informed question.

There are recruiters and agencies. I didn't use one, and I don't think they are as common for eikaiwa or ALT positions as they are for other industries (such as engineering). I don't actually think I know any one I work with or work near in my community that is an English teacher who went through a recruiter. They went through this site, other sites, the Ohayo Sensei newsletter, or had direct contacts with someone already in Japan. I was hired from the resume posted here, although I was offered four positions, one with GABA, and two with ALT dispatch companies in the metro area of Tokyo. I chose the one I have, and have had, largely because I wanted to go to Kansai, and was quite happy living in a more rural setting. I have not regretted my decision in the slightest (protip: more than two weeks in Tokyo or the Tokyo bedroom communities, and I cannot wait to get back to Kansai).

JET is a quasi-government program (before someone jumps in, I am not going to explain CLAIR at this juncture), and only recruits on their own behalf. Many of the eikaiwas also have in-house recruiters, but they only recruit for their own companies.

This is in contrast to many other asian countries, notably Korea, where everyone I know, and myself, went through recruiters who had been hired by hagwons to do the legwork of locating a native English teacher. I have contacts inside GEPIK and EPIK I could ask about whether those programs recruit themselves, or go through recruiters like the hagwons, but I never worked for GEPIK or EPIK, and so I really don't know how it compares to Japan.

I hope this helps.

Is your partner unwilling to share some basic tips?

I also would recommend some basic research/lurking, in addition to initiating a dialog with your partner that is in country performing the work that you are seeking.

You should. You said so in your first post:
"I am predicting a florish of replies saying "do the hard work yourself" and yes I intend to."

Essentially, you are being told precisely the above and a little more.

JET is not a recruiter for anyone except itself.
Kionon and others have explained more that should be to your satisfaction.
Don't stop learning. There's a ton of info out there, whether you search this forum or others, and it would take too long to explain everything you need to know.

No, you are not. You are posting a message on a forum thread. A blog is totally different.

Actually, no, it wouldn't be more efficient. It's not a simple "3 paragraphs & you're done" thing.

As others have said, there aren't really, in the sense you're asking, third party recruiters working in the Jpns market. But to explain what the Jpns market is isn't my place: I'm too far removed from it to provide that sort of response - others will (and have) leapt in to do so, and we're not really here to spoon feed you. Sorry.

You're posting from NZ, aren't you? You should be able to find someone within 5 minutes that has worked in Japan and get them to go over the basics for you. Hell, yr partner on JET (assuming they're already there) should be able to do the same thing and could probably act as a faux recruiter for you.

The search function does (sort of) work. The question is asked often enough that you should be able to find the answer just by trawling through the post history. Hell, read the stickies for a starter. The great bulk of what you seem to want is already in there.
