Hello folks!

Please give your opinions about this salary offering in China...

Do you think a salary of 18000 RMB (with free apartment) is a good salary for a foreign A level teacher? The place of work could be Shanghai, Beijing, Urumqi or Tianjin.

Is it possible to save a decent amount with this kind of salary if someone lives with a family of 2 or 3 members in these cities? The lifestyle should be normal (comfortable but not too luxurious), with self-cooking and no household employees or drivers.

Any rough estimates about how much it is possible to save in these circumstances?

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

I have been to shanghai many times. I know people who have worked there. You should be quite comfortable on this salary there.

A) What do you consider a decent amount of money to save each month?

B) Are there any children in the family who would be attending international schools?

Thanks for the reply, Gilka!

I was thinking about 7000 RMB should be a minimum amount that can be saved. But 50% of the salary or more should be nice.

I'm trying to find this info for a friend who has to finance his son's college education (in China or somewhere else) , so it is important for him to save as much as possible from his salary. But there are no other children, so there won't be additional school fees.

Which school is offering 18000 rmb? Most offer a max of 10000 and the norm is more like 5000.

I wouldn't think you could save anything. Look at the numbers:

-3,000 rent
-1,200 food
-250 utilities
-250 transportation
-5,000 world's oldest profession
-5,000 massages
-2,000 "haircuts"
-1,300 alcohol

Total: 18,000

You won't have anything left!

My point is that the cost of living is not as low in China as some think. You can refer to my above breakdown of the numbers to see how quickly 18,000 may get spent in a large city. Costs may be lower in a smaller city.

So you need 13,300 rmb for the necessities and the rest you would just squander?

It would be very easy to save 50% of the salary, but also easy to spend it all. It kind of depends on whether he tends to go to the gym and read in his spare time or go to western restaurants and clubs. It is very easy to spend 1000RMB in one night in Shanghai, no chickens or anything. I've done it before, but I was just visiting.
