I teach at Sohar college of Applied Science. It is a disaster. I hear that Sur and Rustaq are complete disasters as well. Forced Omanisation is really bringing on the results they want. My students complain about the lack of books and the lack of coordination here on campus. Teachers are often required to teach the entire semester without books simply because of a manifest inability to manage. Here at the college they hire and fire through Hawthorn's chained dog. If you need to work among the colleges, be very careful and then move on when you can.

So... they are demanding that they get paid more money to attend college... have easier exams... and be guaranteed a job when they graduate. Rolling Eyes

Not exactly what I would consider a reflection of any maturity. Perhaps someone should point out that in no democratic country do students receive a free education, get paid an allowance to attend, be able to set the level of the exams, or be guaranteed a job.

And now nursing students in Muscat are protesting because they want their pass grade to be lowered to 50% (from 65%) and the number of times they can fail an exam raised to four times (from once).

Gosh! Now, let's see a showing of hands! How many of you would feel comfortable with a 50-50 chance of surviving the treatment of one of these prospectives "nurses". How many would like a four time "do over" of an operation?

Something is needed to wake these people up!

I have heard from an Omani at Sohar College of Applied Disaster that the Canadians were in charge once upon a time back when they were setting up the colleges. The college hummed like a finely tuned guitar until Omanization happened. Since then the colleges have been plummeting like a rock thrown off of Jebel Akthar.

Education doesn't matter, learning doesn't matter, the buildings don't matter, and the students don't matter. The only thing that matters is making sure these fat, well oiled, well connected Omanis in management remain within the status quo. The Sultan himself has never stepped foot on any of these colleges. If he had done so, none of the tobacco stains on the walls would remain, grass and trees would be planted and the floors would be leveled so that one could walk to and from class without fear of tripping.

the colleges of applied sciences do have their problems, but you give very little bang for your bucks. for more than most esl teachers make worldwide, sur college teachers only have to report for 30 hours a week. no lesson plans, no observed lessons, nothing. no one even checks if you're around for all 30. so it has to be taken in perspective...

Except, qahirii, that some teachers do genuinely care about their profession and their students' education and not just how much money they can earn for the least possible amount of work....
