part of my offer states that i should bring along "duly authenticated copies of all your academic certificates.... The Embassy of Oman in your country should be one of the attesting parties."

um... huh? so the Omani embassy has to notarize or sign my diploma? has anyone done this? is it straightforward or a pain?

This has been discussed many times here and I thought it was all tertiary education jobs, but perhaps MoM skips it.

It is a process that involves your attesting to the fact that your photocopies of your documents are legitimate copies... signed in front of a notary... then it goes to your state agency to have the notary confirmed... then it goes to the State Department where they confirm something (that your state is a state or something - maybe that your university exists). Last stop is the Omani Embassy who adds another piece of paper and stamp. Naturally every step costs money.

Assuming that you are in the US and in DC, it is a straightforward process that you can do in a couple days. But if you are not there, it also involves hiring a company to haul the papers around. There are companies that do this and perhaps someone can chime in with a company that they have used lately.

It is also described on a page of the State Department's website.

Of course, if they really wanted to know if your degree is legitimate, they could just have you arrange for your university to send them a transcript, but that would be too cheap and easy and actually prove that your degree is real.

It's not similar at all. since SK signed the Hague Convention it is stright forward. In Oman, it takes time. But with MOM, you do not have to get the Omani Embassy in your country to authenticate it. Only, your Uni, State, and State Department.

I was not aware that all these hoops needed jumping through! My process was much simpler. Got hired; came to Oman. Brought copy of diploma to US Embassy: they verified the university and stamped the diploma copy as approved. Gave it to the employer. The end.
Of course, this was 10 years ago, so maybe the rat maze has increased in complexity and expense since then?

Did the same thing only 2 years ago. I think for Americans, this is the best and least expensive way. I.E. FREE.

I took my original diplomas to US Consulate in Muscat to be validated and then took them to Foreign Ministry and they stamped them

I just received an offer from Sohar U and was asked to send copies of my qualifications which have been authenticated in Australia. I've had several jobs in the ME but this is the first time I've been asked for authenticated quals. Sohar U haven't given me any info about the process, probable timeline, likely cost, or which certificates need attestation.

Is anybody else in the same boat? Do I have to send my original certificates to the Omani embassy, or is a copy enough?

Never let your originals out of your hands. Always use copies... Can't comment on the requirements in Oz.

Question about processing visa docs in Oman: With a UAE job offer I was told that I had to: 1. get all docs notarized by lawyer, 2. send to Canadian Foreign Affairs and International Trade in Ottawa for endorsing, then 3. on to UAE embassy in Ottawa for attesting -and then back to me. Then I would enter UAE as visitor and later switch to working visa.

How does this compare to Oman? Do the docs have to go through the same process? Or, can I perform the last step after arriving in Oman?
