I'm expected to give grades to each of the 400+ students in my oral English class even though I only see them for 45 minutes every 2 weeks. What do they do with them? I don't give a rodent's posterior. Throw them out, change them around, sell them to the highest bidder or use them to wipe their bums. Numbers are their obsession, not mine.

So, would the higher bidders be the western unis? Tell us about your full time western uni prep work. Are you in a full command there?

You fail at reading comprehension. I will give you a 10% since I am generous. Your grade would be doctored anyway. I am going to bet the teachers you had also had their grades 'modified' since you sure as hell can't comprehend or communicate in English.
Aren't there more of us that fail? Wink

Hey dudes,

Tell us about your experiences with students for abroad studies and how you pass them all.

Thank the Lord for that as I shuddered at the thought of you teaching English.

I don't give the grades for that program Igor. The exams are prepared in Canada, and then sent to Canada to be marked after they're completed. The marks are recorded there. So technically, I don't pass or fail them and nobody in China does anything but invigilate the exams. Got it? What does your program do?

It's nice to only proctor the exams and have them sent to unbias lands. Got it. Don't worry Smile

In my program, it's not that simple although my students get an appropriate feedback after every assessment which is beneficial to them.

Anyone have any tips or tricks to force students to get the grades we assign?

Uh...not even sure what kind of a response you are looking for here. Likely, very few of us have the power to 'force' anything. Even if we did, it would potentially cost us our jobs.

You could give the grades directly to the students......

But, I predict that you would be creating many problems for yourself.

It is never a good idea to "force" anything in China.

you mean any way to force the school to enter the grades you submit
into the students' records?

maybe you could take it up with the union rep?

I meant a tactful way to tell Chinese staff that we stand by the grades we give. Perhaps even a tactful way to refuse to grade in the future if we know that they will just be changed.

IE.

"You hired me to be a Western teacher, so I am grading in Western style. Do you think changing the grades is good or helps the student? If the parents have an issue I would be happy to speak with them personally and explain myself and my grades."

Story: The one teacher who didn't change my grades, we passed out oral test grades in an advanced young class. These children study hardcore (call the Chinese teachers at 8pm while reviewing homework to make sure they are saying 'vending machine' correctly).

I've never seen such cold stares from eight-year-olds before. No one got below a 90 (and they earned that), yet they were NOT happy. Told me their grades went down from last time.

I have a different situation as I teach corporate but there are still grades that go to the company's HR. In many cases, the students have to pay upfront for the course and if they pass then the company will pay for the course but if they fail, then they don't receive anything. I think it's a good way as it really makes the students put the effort in.

With all due respect, i am wondering whether the poster would pass the students to keep them in the next level Market Leader intermediate class. If so, i'd love to see the progress the poster's students will have made on the end of all the fine business courses. Perhaps, the progress report to the HR is more positive than the reality.

In my professional opinion, it ought not to be just about the students/schools willingness but about their capabilities and integrity. Most certainly, appreciating students' effort is a part of the teacher's job; however, s/he must make it clear how high the bar is and when or whether the students can jump it successfully.

igorG, I thought your last post was rude. You automatically make the assumption that I simply care nothing about my students and their progress and that snide little comment about the "fine business courses" was not necessary. I have never fabricated any reports to any HR nor have I ever passed a student who didn't deserve it. The whole point to my post was to say that in my case, the grades do matter.
