Hi. I've been thinking of relocating from Indonesia where I've been teaching for the past 3 years. I quite like the region but the mosques are very loud and I really haven't gotten a whole night's sleep in the time I've been here and think I'd better start making plans elsewhere. I have two questions about Vietnam, I have been there before twice actually...
1. As someone who has been living in Vietnam for a while, what would you say are the three worst things about living there? The most annoying, difficult, dangerous, unhealthy or that kind of thing? While I've been in Vietnam for a few weeks here and there, it might be different living there?
2. I understand I need a criminal record check. I discovered this year it is very easy and cheap to get one done by a private company who can access the criminal record data base; however it is expensive and slow to get one from the police themselves when one is abroad as I am: the former is called a name-check, the latter uses finger-prints. Do you know if the name check type done by a private para-police type company is accepted by the Vietnamese authorities? |

1. Easily, the most annoying, dangerous, and difficult thing about Vietnam is the traffic and the utter chaos it is. I've lived here about 5 years now, and I still haven't gotten used to it. All other annoyances are minor. I don't like having to bargain, getting stared at, and the lack of professionalism, but there are things you can do mitigate those.
2. Usually the background check from a private company is not sufficient. But my experience is only with checks from America. I'm assuming you're Canadian if you're asking about fingerprints. Last I heard, Canada is the only country which requires them for the background check. |

I think most people would agree with this, especially if you live in Sai Gon, where it has become pretty hellish. Just walking around is a pain. You can use xe om (motorbike taxis), but it's still pretty stressful. Taking taxis will add up quickly and the drivers are often dodgy. The subway/skytrain or whatever they're in the process of building won't be finished for years.
It's probably a lot like Indonesia .
For me, after years in Thailand, the lifestyle in VN (dating, nightlife, shopping, travelling around the country, eating out) is quite dull, inconvenient and low quality. Coming from Indonesia though, it may seem the opposite.
Restrictive and unclear visa, work permit and banking policies could be number 3. Again though, it's not dissimilar to other countries. That leads to your second question, which is addressed (mostly for Americans) in any number of other threads:

Although I generally have respect for your knowledge and have defended you from attacks in the past, this answer mystifies me on two levels. First, I may have missed some subtlety in the OP's prose, but how did you discern that he is a Canadian? He [she?] may be back with us but I don't think your old pall VietCanada is lurking behind every new login.
Second, although state checks without prints are available depending on the locality, the national FBI check as far as I know still requires prints whether one applies directly or through one of the private companies that they call a Channelers. I will leave the job of a full rundown to a Canadian poster, but I did a few quick checks and found that online, so-called name checks are available in Ontario without prints while British Columbia seems to have an online no-prints application but will only mail to a B.C. address. Canada may be as variable as the US but with only 10 jurisdictions instead of 50. |

I didn't say anything about VietCanada... If he's asking about fingerprints, im inferring he's Canadian because none of the other English speaking countries require finger prints for an over seas criminal check.
Canadian teachers generally have the most difficult time getting a criminal record check done outside of their home country. |

Maybe just teasing you a little about VietCanada. I meant it lightly. |
