"Civilians killed in Somalia raids (al Jazeera)
Clan elders and residents of southern Somalia have said that about 100 civilians were killed in US and Ethiopian air attacks this week.

A senior US official said the US had only carried out one raid in Somalia and no civilians had died.

The raid also missed three senior al-Qaeda figures wanted over bombings in Kenya and Tanzania, he said.

Eight to 10 "terrorist targets" were killed but the United States was still in pursuit of the three most wanted suspects, the official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

"All I can say ... is that it was a targeted strike at al-Qaeda connected or affiliated people," he said.

The Pentagon has said the operation was prompted by "credible intelligence" that the "principal al-Qaeda leadership" in east Africa was in the area that was hit by an AC-130 gunship on Monday."

"Somalia declares state of emergency (al Jazeera)
Somalia's parliament has declared a state of emergency for three months to restore security after several weeks of war.

Members of parliament passed the vote in Baidoa on Saturday, the town that acted as the interim seat of government until Somali and Ethiopian troops ousted the Council of Islamic Courts that controlled much of the south.

"A three-month state of emergency has been passed. If need arises for the government to extend the period then the president will have to ask parliament for approval," Osman Elmi Boqore, the second deputy speaker, told parliament."

"MOGADISHU, Somalia - Lawmakers on Saturday authorized the government to declare martial law as the country�s internationally recognized leaders struggled to assert their authority after battling an Islamic movement that had controlled much of southern Somalia.

Parliament�s approval allows the government to impose martial law for a period of three months starting at a time of its choosing, said deputy parliament speaker Osman Ilmi Boqore, who made the announcement during a parliament session broadcast live on a government-owned radio station.

Boqore said 154 members of Somalia�s transitional parliament voted by a show of hands in favor of a government motion to impose martial law in the country. He said two lawmakers voted against the motion."

"AU delegation arrives in Somalia (al Jazeera)
African Union officials have arrived in Somalia to finalise plans for a peacekeeping force as itnerim government troops search for weapons after Ethiopian troops helped them win a two-week war against the Union of Islamic Courts.

Somalia's weak interim government says it wants African peacekeepers to be deployed as soon as possible.

Abdirahman Dinari, a spokesman for the interim government, said on Sunday: "They came to meet with government officials in order to discuss how the African Union troops could be deployed."

"They will visit several places in the country ... and they'll meet with senior government security officials. We hope the African troops will be deployed as soon as possible."

"Somalia eases media ban (al Jazeera)

Somalia's government has lifted its ban on four media outlets it had closed, accusing them of biased coverage during the recent war, media owners have said.

The interim government, newly equipped with emergency powers, ordered HornAfrik Media, Shabelle Media Network, the Koranic radio station IQK and Al Jazeera, to cease operations in Somalia on Monday.

It announced it was easing its restrictions on Tuesday."

"MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali troops and allied Ethiopian soldiers conducted house-to-house searches Monday, pursuing gunmen who carried out an attack in the northeastern part of the capital, residents said.

Four rocket propelled grenades were fired at a convoy of Ethiopian and government troops Sunday night in Mogadishu�s Hurwa district, destroying one military vehicle and triggering a 30-minute gunbattle, residents said.

�Residents in Hurwa district have stopped sending their children to school as businesses and schools were closed,� said Shine Moalim Hussein, a resident in the district. �Ethiopians and Somali troops are carrying out house-to-house searches.�"

Eritrea warns of Somali 'quagmire' (al Jazeera)

The president of Eritrea has warned that any efforts to deploy African Union troops in Somalia would be doomed to failure.

In an exclusive interview with Al Jazeera, Isaias Afewerki also said that the African country has not seen the last of the Council of Islamic Courts.

The group was forced to flee its strongholds in the south of the country, including the capital Mogadishu, by Somali government troops with the support of Ethiopian forces in a war launched just before Christmas.

Afewerki's comments came as a senior UN envoy held talks in Mogadishu on Thursday with Abdullahi Yusuf, the Somali president, to discuss the deployment of African peacekeepers.
