Just thought the wording of the title was funny. It makes it sound like we poor single women are soldiering on in spite of not being married, "living without a husband" as if we are living without kidneys or indoor plumbing.

It's actually the "most" part of the headline that I find strange. It seems misleading at best, and incorrect possibly, to say that 51% or 52% is "most". I notice they do that with polling numbers as well, like: "Most Americans support the war in Iraq, with 50.5% supporting it."

Does anyone find the state of western family units and relationships to be completely ridiculous?

Its hardly a surprise white folks are dying out. No babies!! everyone is to preoccupied with their own little materialistic world.

A complete breakdown in natural patterns of life. next. Will marriages to robots be legal?

The problem is that marriage is outdated. We need a system that reflects current attitudes. Few people have a job for life, or live in the same place for life. So why have a wife or husband for life. Marriage should be like an E2 visa. A short term contract, any work on the side and you're out, even if you're doing it for free. If you run away mid contract, well you gonna have to wait till that contract expires before you can get married again. When your contract finishes you decide to re-sign, sign a new partner or get a ticket home.

I didn't read the article, but I hope my comments helped.

There are two and only two differences between families 'now' and 'then'. Now family members speak openly of the same old problems people kept quiet about then and now are no longer required to stay legally bound in the lousy relationships they were then.

living and working abroad for those of us who are partnered but not married can be an issue. if only one of us gets a job, only one of us gets the visa and can stay, if i'm not mistaken.

No, it just points out that you talk out of your ass! The family has been the center of civilization since the beginning. It basically shows how much trouble Western culture is in when idiots like you start to think like this! Rolling Eyes

My only complaint about articles like this is that they make it sound like something has changed and women and men just don't need each other anymore. I couldn't disagree more. While there are always statistical outliers, most people need others. It's normal, natural, and human. This whole idea that marriage and families are outmoded somehow is just bizarre, to me. I understand if someone chose poorly and they don't want to repeat that mistake. That's fine, but that doesn't mean the rest of us don't want - or need - the chance to make that choice for ourselves.

He said marriage, not the family unit.

They are not dependent upon each other to exist.

That`s not true at all. For the bulk of human history we have lived tribally, in "extended families", and the actual parantage was not even a big issue as people were promiscuous and all children were raised collectively by the tribe/village. The nuclear family as a formal institution only arose with the industrial revolution. It was the most efficient unit for getting the most labour out of the population...
