I'm in two minds about this. I've always advocated military training as a good way to build discipline and self-respect, but ya gotta feel for the poor litlle buggers.
Ah well, if they resent their parents too much they can always just leave them to rot when they get old.

This is why Americans have football and the rest of the English speaking world have rugby. |

Yeah, that's the kind of relationship I want to have with my children. |

Many children today do not appreciate what they have nor do they have an understanding of what it means to work hard (much of this can also be said about adults, but that's another topic in itself). These types of camps help the children understand what it means to "work hard". To just throw your child into it for the sake of "cuniang" is wrong. Though, for the sake of saving your child from a terrible future? I support it entirely. I guess you can chaulk up my opinion to my upbringing. I did not have a silver spoon in MY mouth; had to work for everything. Do I regret it? Not one cotton-picking second! Working hard builds character, respect, and overall self-esteem. |

On the other hand the kind of parent so hastily and by tricking the kid is probably not a good parent... they probably think shipping the kid off for a week will be some magic trick to undo their bad parenting which will continue when he gets home. Plus I wonder why the article mentioned kids who play computer games too much instead of kids joining gangs.
And for such a short-term program I doubt it has much effect anyway. Here's one example of another approach.

Now that was a kid who really needed an intervention. |

Agreed. My response was made under the assumption that the parents have tried their best with their child (i.e. good parenting at home, sustained periods of intervention when the child is bad, etc.), yet, there were no positive results. |
