Empire v. Democracy: Why Nemesis Is at Our Door
by Chalmers Johnson and Tom Engelhardt

...I had set out to explain how exactly our government came to be so hated around the world. As a CIA term of tradecraft, "blowback" does not just mean retaliation for things our government has done to, and in, foreign countries. It refers specifically to retaliation for illegal operations carried out abroad that were kept totally secret from the American public. These operations have included the clandestine overthrow of governments various administrations did not like, the training of foreign militaries in the techniques of state terrorism, the rigging of elections in foreign countries, interference with the economic viability of countries that seemed to threaten the interests of influential American corporations, as well as the torture or assassination of selected foreigners. The fact that these actions were, at least originally, secret meant that when retaliation does come as it did so spectacularly on September 11, 2001 the American public is incapable of putting the events in context. Not surprisingly, then, Americans tend to support speedy acts of revenge intended to punish the actual, or alleged, perpetrators. These moments of lashing out, of course, only prepare the ground for yet another cycle of blowback...

This is a list of the other articles availible at this site, which means there's a lot of reading left for R.S.. And he'll say that it's the Bush administration that's into the scaremongering.... Hahahahahahaha. Sad thing is, he probably believes that. If he's into stories that scare people, maybe he should try this link. At least they'd be entertaining.

anti-war = anti-American?

That's an interesting supposition.

This isn't a 'leftist' site. The people who run it are openly libertarian.
But yes, much more productive to shoot the messenger rather than the message.

the reason the world is anti-american is more or less media/educational/intellectual(universities)/and political indoctrination...

let's see

Cubans must endure marathon speeches about imperial yanquistas
Arabs/Muslims read/watch insane amounts of anti-american crap
Europeans are constantly told by their chattering classes that America is something to be either despised or condescended to
Many Latin Americans have centuries of built-up anti-gringo sentiments
Chinese can be whipped up into a nationalistic anti-Americanism in a matter of hours, depending on the tools employed by the mandarins in Beijing...

and much closer to this board's raison d'etre-
don't even get me started on the sickness that pervades Canadaian and Korean socieites when it comes to America.

and these leftisit blowhards think it all just has to do with the Bush administration.....

And all of this exists in a vacuum? None of it has any basis in valid grievance? America has done nothing to earn the anger of the any of these peoples?

By the standards on this board, I am not a leftist in international politics, but neither am I blind. America's hands are filthy in each of the regions you mention. That doesn't mean any or all of them are righteous, but those people have earned their anger at America. We have fucked all them, hard. They have arrived at their anger at us legitimately.

None of this means I think Castro is a good man, that the Middle Eastern despots are in the right, that China is the best hope for the world. But we have screwed all of these people, unjustly, for our own selfish reasons.

Wake up. The reason much of the world is anti-American is because we have been awful, rotten bassturds in the conduct of our foreign affairs for at least the last century, with a few notable [possible] exceptions.

that's bullshit....

we saved this world from both facism and communism.

it boils down to jealousy...

why do canadians have issues with toronto?

why do upstate New Yorkers have problems with NYC?

why do many French dislike Paris?

Even if the US had prevented the world from being taken over by facists, communists, various empires/tribes (the spanish, germans, japanese) in the most perfect way....

we'd still be hated.

It's human nature to mix together feelings of jealousy and hatred.

If she's hot and has pie, doubly yes.

Our own selfish reasons??? Uhhh although I'll say that American's have gotten their hands dirty, I'll have to remind you about something called the Cold War...see sometimes in war you have to team up with people you don't like....Also a lot of that anti-americanism is just plain ignorance built around some facts...In spain I met so many people who wanted to tell me about how evil the american government it....like oh they could have invaded japan and not lost many american lives..they dropped the bomb because they wanted to use their new technology....seriously I've heard people say this....people who have no fricken clue about american loses and what it took to root the japanese out from each tiny island in the pacific...also people who act like the soviet union not only wasn't imperialist but seem to be unaware that it existed....could america have afforded to let soviet castro sytle governments prop up all over south america????sure no problem...let's all become commies
