Sounds really strange. Sounds like a potential knife in the back scenario Koreans are so good at! Who is the recruiter, by the way? |

Hello. I've just been offered a job teaching English at a college in South Korea, and I need some advice fast.
I have asked the recruiter I'm using to in turn ask the school to contact me, but I've yet to receive the phone call or email from the school. The recruiter has answered all my questions I've presented, but I still need to touch base with the school. I'm in the United States, btw.
The school does not pay for airfare. I will have to foot the bill for that myself.
The recruiter directed me to send HER my documents, such as diploma, transcripts, pics, whatever. I thought I'd have to send those to the school. I've sent those off, and she has them already.
The recruiter has told me I will be getting my work visa after I arrive at the school. Last time I got a job in South Korea, I had to go to the Korean Embassy to get the work visa before ever leaving my host country. The contract says nothing about who pays for the visa costs, which will involve my flying to Japan if I have to wait until I get there to get the WP.
I don't know which way to go on this one. The pay is great, the school isn't on the "Black List", and I can't find anything negative anywhere else about it. Also, I'll be teaching my target-age learners.
Should I accept the job? Right now, I could go either way. It'd be nice if the school provided me with a plane ticket, but....
Any advice you can offer will be appreciated. |
Ask for your documents back.
If they are expecting you to fly on at your own expense then you can reasonably expect to have a visa BEFORE you fly.
Sounds like the recruiter is trying to get you in and it is NOT confirmed yet (or you would get your visa confirmation number). If s/he is successful they get the commission and you get a job. If it goes south it is on your nickel and the recruiter will try to sell you on some hakwon cause you are out your airfare and jobless.
Don't expect anything to happen over the next few days however. It is a holiday here and there is nobody in the offices (college or immigration) till the middle of next week.
All in all it does not sound good for you. Insist - no visa = no teacher. . |

Thanks a ton, my friends. You guys may have just saved me from dropping big bucks on yet another plane ticket to a dud-job. Talk about "dodging a bullet".
This may still work out, though. I may still end up at that college teaching. I have insisted I get the visa before buying any plane tickets to South Korea. I have also told the recruiter that if the school provides me with a round trip ticket, I'll come without the visa. I've also insisted the school call me within 36 hours or the deal is off.
Now. What are my odds of my getting my documents back? That was my last copy of my diploma, and it'll take 10 days for me to get new copies from my uni. |
If they really want you they will give you what you ask for.
If they don't then I would say you have a 50/50 chance of ever seeing your docs again.

Systor, what beaver said was true. Most if not all, do not pay for your airfare. You were wise to wait. Oh and getting your documents back is 50/50 and not impossible. I know because a friend of mine cancelled with a recruiter due to RL circumstances and he got his documents back a few weeks later. Just don't expect them to send it overnight.

I agree with the Beaver. Unis don't pay airfare. Let them know that if they process your VISA beforehand, then you'll come. Be easy on the deadline. Seolal holiday begins and nothing will get done until the earliest Tuesday. College gigs are good and worth it.
All the best to you. |

Two things:
1) Don't send anything of value to a recruiter.
2) Don't depart without that work visa. |
