Should I accept the job? Right now, I could go either way. It'd be nice if the school provided me with a plane ticket, but....
Any advice you can offer will be appreciated. |
Ask for your documents back.
If they are expecting you to fly on at your own expense then you can reasonably expect to have a visa BEFORE you fly.
Sounds like the recruiter is trying to get you in and it is NOT confirmed yet (or you would get your visa confirmation number). If s/he is successful they get the commission and you get a job. If it goes south it is on your nickel and the recruiter will try to sell you on some hakwon cause you are out your airfare and jobless.
Don't expect anything to happen over the next few days however. It is a holiday here and there is nobody in the offices (college or immigration) till the middle of next week.
All in all it does not sound good for you. Insist - no visa = no teacher. . |

This may still work out, though. I may still end up at that college teaching. I have insisted I get the visa before buying any plane tickets to South Korea. If they really want you they will give you what you ask for.
If they don't then I would say you have a 50/50 chance of ever seeing your docs again.

Systor, what beaver said was true. Most if not all, do not pay for your airfare. You were wise to wait. Oh and getting your documents back is 50/50 and not impossible. I know because a friend of mine cancelled with a recruiter due to RL circumstances and he got his documents back a few weeks later. Just don't expect them to send it overnight.

I agree with the Beaver. Unis don't pay airfare. Let them know that if they process your VISA beforehand, then you'll come. Be easy on the deadline. Seolal holiday begins and nothing will get done until the earliest Tuesday. College gigs are good and worth it.
