If it is indeed feasible and if Santiago actually moves in this direction -- and it might -- we would likely see Chile as an example of a non-belligerent nation-state looking into advanced, nuclear energy sources.

Perhaps Bolivia and/or Peru might try to make something of it. But still this case would stand in stark contrast to Tehran and the international concerns it has generated.

Well, if they get out of hand the US can just overthrow the government and appoint a dictator to run things, not that the beacon of freedom would ever do such a thing. Rolling Eyes

You're right, America wouldn't do that.

FYI, this is 2007, not 1907.

Been there, done that.

If fair is fair, nuclear proliferation will be stopped no matter where it occurs.

Just a brief list (I'm too tired to typ alot) of some US Sponsered/Backed/Supported/Financed/Led/Fomenteted/Accepted (in violation of US government policy) coups/invasions/occupations/etc:

Cuba April 15, 1961
Iran August 19, 1953
Guatamala Summer 1953
South Vietnam 1963 (Diem), 1964 (Minh), 1975 (Thieu)
Chile September 11, 1973
Panama 1968, 1989
Haiti 1915
Dominican Republic 1965
Iraq 2003

You're right though, it's not 1907.

But the Chilean govt is not proposing or even discussing nuclear weapons, Huffdaddy. Neither is the Chilean govt holding Holocaust-denial conferences aimed at undermining a neighbor's "right" to exist or proposing that we rewrite the South American map according to its own sensibilities.

With regards nuclear weapons, Chile and most if not all other Latin American and Caribbean states have already categorically renounced nuclear weapons.

Want more? Have you seen the Treaty of Tlatelolco yet...?

Perhaps Huffdaddy should check this out. Signatories can have nuclear energy programs as long as they are accompanied by regular weapons inspections and approved by the inspectors.

When you start enriching plutonium or uranium to near weapons-grade, beyond 20%, its a warning signal. For power-generating purposes generally only single-digit percentage enrichment is required. Think of all the Holocaust-fact-finding seminars they could hold with that money Iran would save!

Okay. That's what I get for posting on a serious topic while I'm half drunk. Still, it's not new news...

The rest of the discussion will have to wait until I sober up. Cool

These high-handed "I-reject-all-authority-and-insist-everybody-reinvent-the-wheel-anytime-anybody-says-anything" posts annoy me to no end.

Chile does not at present have nuclear power. Its govt recently formed a feasibility study group to advise the President whether Chile can and should develop nuclear power. Chile's El Mercurio, the nation's most powerful newspaper, ran this front-page story several days ago.

So, yes, it is news -- whatever you can spontaneously google, notwithstanding. And incidentally, your chart appears to be out-of-date. Should Chile not be off-white, or whatever color "considering first plant" is...?

Would that the future is knowable. Guessable, yes; knowable, no. Chile has no ambitions now. Will that ever be the case? One thinks not. The environmental risks alone are enough to oppose nuclear power use at this time.

I have no quibble, in particular, with scientific development and see no reason that nuclear power should not exist, but I also believe we know too little about it and have far better options overall. That said, I'd have to look into Chile's power situation to actually state an opinion about that nation's use of nuclear power in specific.

However, the juxtaposition by the OP of Chile and Iran was intentional, stupid trolling.

Umm, okay. So do you actually have a point? Or are you just keeping us informed?

Beg your pardon, Huffdaddy. There must have been a mistake. I thought I had posted this story in the Current Events forum.

Such a post -- that is, one that does not denounce 9/11 as a conspiracy or contribute to one of Regicide's neverending JFK conspiracy-theory threads, one that fails to attack or angrily denounce the Iraqi War and American foreign policy generally, one that does not shrilly demand W. Bush's impeachment, or one that cannot contribute to the running evolution "debate" -- must seem confusing here in this forum, whatever it might be called. And I apologize for this confusion, this break in the routine.

In any case, should you not find a story on Chile's just-announced intention to look into the feasibility of developing nuclear power, particularly to compare-and-contrast this with the concurrent Iranian story, I will neither compel you to read nor to respond to this thread...

It's quite alright. I do find people's attempts to inject actual current events into the forum acceptable, albeit sometimes confusing.

Not to worry, I never feel compelled to read or respond. I have duly compared and contrasted the stories. Thank you, Gopher.
