ttompatz: what defines levels? obviously a level 3 teacher just has to have a BA and be a native English speaker. What about the others?

Standard Government levels/pay grades:

Level 3 = A Bachelor's degree and basic requirment for E2.

Level 2 =
◎ A Teacher's certificate for elementary or secondary school OR
◎ An English education certificate as TESOL/TEFL comprised of a minimum of 100 course hours with a Master's degree OR
A Bachelor's degree with at least one year of full-time English teaching experience at accredited institutions

Level 1 =
◎ A Teacher's Certificate for elementary or secondary school with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions OR
◎ An English education certificate as TESOL/TEFL comprised of a minimum of 100 course hours with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions OR
◎ A Master's degree with at least two years of full-time teaching experience at accredited institutions

so to bottom line it all for everyone....

LVL 3 = qualify for E2.
LVL 2 = LEVEL 3 + 1 year experience.
LVL 1 = LEVEL 2 + 2 years experience +TESOL certification.

AND to make sure that we compare apples to apples.,

The salaries I quoted above include the suplimental pay for afternoon classes - meaning you will be teaching 28 classes of 40 minutes for a gross salary of between 2.2 and 3.0 million won depending on level + all the other expected benefits AND the extra holiday time.

Much better than the average hakwon gig teaching 30 classes of 50 minutes for 2.0-2.2 and 10 vacation days.

and ya, for the record, I like my school, my co-workers and my job and I am a re-signer

AND (blatent plug here) we are still looking for 1 additional foreign teacher. Look for our ad in the Korea Jobs Forum.

Nope...

our PUBLIC school is offering up to 2.2 for a green as grass teacher (level3), 2.5 for level 2 and up to 3.0 for level 1 + a 19py apartment instead of the usual 5py shoebox, up to 6 weeks vacation AND the expected usual other benefits (medical, pension).

Of special note here is that we are NOT way down south or out in the sticks. Housing is in Bundang @Seohyun station and the school provides transportation to/from the school every day (20 minute commute).

Salaries are on the rise and housing is improving.

Which position is it on the job board? Not for me, but I'm trying to find the best contracts out there so as when it comes time to re-up come summer, I have leverage.
I did think your school was in the sticks from previous posts. Sounds like a sweet set-up. How is the vacation clause worded? 2 summer, 2 winter, 2 upon re-upping?

The school is classed as rural but it is only a 20 minute commute (school provides transportation) from home and home is a 5 minute walk to Seohyun station in Bundang.

I couldn't find the posting here (buried way down the list perhaps) but it is also here ( http://english.seoul.go.kr/community/jobs/jobs_read.htm?no=307 )

Contract reads 2 summer, 2 winter and 2 for re-up.

Sounds good, but it's not the case for 99.9% of people though. Read my other post. I mentioned that I'm stuck at 2.3. Without more formal education I can't get any higher. After two successful years at my public school in Gyeonggi I asked for 2.4 and they said "No sorry. Our hands are tied. You can stay for 2.3 but we can't offer more". I left for a better location in Seoul, but I'm still stuck at 2.3. I did have after-school programs which paid well, but they were patchy in that the funding was late some semesters and was cut off early in other semesters. Good to here that more money is out there in some cases, but after a recent exhaustive job search I can say that it is not widespread.

The ad you placed doesn't match the description above.

I think that has to do with the fact that the ad stated they were interested in hiring a level 2 or 3 teacher. The pay scale they listed probably covered only those levels. I could be wrong though.

Conditions are indeed improving. As I have mentioned numerous times before, Chungnam Province has the best compensation/contract conditions of any public school positions being offered in Korea, and we still were unable to fill our demand during our winter recruitment session (we only filled 18 of the 30 positions!).

Getting the information out there is one problem, and the other is, many do not want to live in rural Korea. It's not for everyone.

That being said, we recruited some of the best people I have ever seen come through our program.

Instead of the standard 3 level government contracts, we offer 5 levels (much higher salaries for qualified applicants). We offer far more vacation than the standard public school contracts. Moreover, though the contract conditions state 22 classroom hours per week, those that visit multiple schools have had their workload reduced by 1~3 classroom hours per week.

Things continue to improve.

Can you share with us the compensation/contract conditions for Chungnam Province?

http://www.cne.go.kr/images/engl/epic/epic.pdf

I'm not going to copy and paste the entire contract here, as you can find the conditions online.

Level 1++: 3.0
1+: 2.8
1: 2.6
2: 2.4
3: 2.2

AC

BTW, we are going to be starting an after-school program (a glorified hagwon for poor children in the public school system). All of the 15 districts in our province will be getting additional funds to hire an additional foreigner to conduct the classes (that is on top of the current supplementary classes that are already offered). My guess is that some of the current teachers will try to double dip.

I hope they allow it.

If you are a level 1++ and not applying to the Hong Kong NET program, do so. Double the pay, easily.

I am 1++, and I looked into Hong Kong years ago. However, I don't follow your calculations. The max I could get in Hong Kong would be around 40,000 HKD per month (but that would take about 6 years in their program before I was at that level). If anything, that could be considered roughly comparable (with extra work, housing allowance, etc.), only after 10 years were invested there (I don't plan on teaching that much longer).

Care to elaborate on how you came up with those numbers, the double salary that is? What am I missing?

The description in the first quote included the supplimental pay for the afternoon classes (bringing the class load up to 28 classes of 40 minutes duration.

The job listed in the 2nd quote states a base pay of 2.0-2.2 but later in the ad it mentions the extra pay for the afternoon program (bringing the totals up to the numbers listed above).

I would also like to mention that the usual beginning salary for a newbie in most government programs USED TO BE 1.8 mil for 22 classes which is why I mentioned it in this thread. Salaries are on the rise.

I'm only interested in hearing the BASE pay figures when comparing raises in salary. When people go quoting higher numbers (at 28 hours) when the base is 23 hours, or whatever, it's very misleading -- especially for newbees. Sounds like a sales pitch.

It's great if salaries are on the rise, but that's easy to say if you compare it to numbers from just after IMF. If you compare numbers in the past five years, you'll find the raise is not so significant. (unless something has changed that I missed).

I started at 2.2 as a newbee at a hagwon back in 2002. That was a good newbee wage back then, when the average was closer to 2.0 to 2.1 at other places.

My base pay at my uni today is 2.1. I get between 19,000 and 30,000 per hour for OT, depending on what time of the day the OT happens, and the type of class. Not the greatest salary in the world, but I also have a 2BR apartment and a really great new office that's almost like another small house.

Conditions and hours worked for that base are important to consider. Options for newbees are limited, but those with teaching degrees and experience should be looking hard at conditions as well.
