Somewhere Jerry Falwell is reading this and thinking, "Man, that's f*cked up." Not for the daughter holding out til marriage part, and not for the father giving up porn. It's the idea of holding a ball where the daughter basically says, "Dad, I promise not to start f*cking until I'm married", and the father says, "And honey, I promise not to beat off to porn." Doesn't that creep you out?

"In what is becoming a trend among conservative Christians in the United States, girls as young as nine are pledging to their fathers to remain virgins until they wed, in elaborate ceremonies dubbed "Purity Balls."
The gala affairs are intended to celebrate the father-daughter relationship.
The highlight is when the fathers and daughters exchange vows, with dad signing a covenant to protect his daughter's chastity by living an unblemished life and the daughter promising not to have sex until marriage.
Many fathers at the ceremonies also slip "purity rings" around the finger of their misty-eyed daughters or offer them "chastity bracelets" and other jewelry that the girls can entrust to their husbands on their wedding night.
"The father makes a pledge that he is going to keep his mind pure and be faithful to her mother and there is also a time when there is a conversation about putting the right kinds of things in your mind, such as the father not using pornography," Leslee Unruh, founder of Abstinence Clearinghouse, a leader in the so-called purity movement, told AFP in describing the balls.
.... The popularity of the balls in the United States, especially among evangelical Christians, mirrors the Bush administration's support of abstinence education in US schools. The government's funding for such initiatives has more than doubled in recent years to 206 million dollars (150 million euros).
But critics say that while teaching abstinence to children may be laudable, it is just as essential to make them aware of sexually transmitted diseases and condom use.
They also point to studies showing that the majority of adolescents who take purity pledges break them within a few years, often by engaging in risky and unprotected sex.
One study conducted by researchers at the universities of Columbia and Yale found that 88 percent of pledgers wind up having sex before marriage.
"Unfortunately these young people tend, once they start to have sex, to have more partners in a shorter period of time and to use contraception much less than their non-pledging peers," said Debra Hauser, executive vice president at Advocates for Youth, a Washington-based non-profit organization.
"Teens may pledge with the best of intention... and then as they break their pledges they are so shamed and embarrassed that it's unlikely they will go for help." |

With all of the disease out there, this sounds like a smart idea- especially for those who live near big cities. |

i made the pledge to not drink alcahol and do drugs at my confirmation. Out of my class I think 80% had drank before they were 14(two years later) and the majority ahd done drugs(E or weed mainly) by the time they were 16. Pledges do not work. |

Nothing wrong with educating kids and giving them the facts. Beyond that, you gotta trust them. |

This sounds creepy to me.
For one thing, what kid is going to refuse to take the pledge if Dad/Mom ask? "No, Dad. I plan to pull a train with the football team when I finally get to high school..." No, I don't think the kids are freely choosing to attend or not attend this kind of 'ball'.
Secondly, why is it only the girls who are taking the pledge? Why aren't the sons? Is virginity something only important for girls?
I do think current pop culture is too sex-obsessed, but this alternative seems virginity-obsessed. What's wrong with a little moderation? |

How is it a smart idea when studies have shown that pledge takers are more likely to have unsafe sex with more partners?

You've got to remember who we're dealing with here.
Of course there's nothing wrong with educating kids, but the fundies sure think there's something wrong with it. They'd rather keep their kids in that dark about anything that disagrees with what a few random men a couple of thousand years ago felt was 'moral.' They don't trust their kids. They think that if you tell your kids how to be smart about sex the kids are just going to go out and have sex. They are right not to trust their kids with knowledge. The more their kids learn to think, the more likely they are to see how backwards and wrong their parents and religious leaders are. Fundies aren't allowed to think for themselves. |

Only fundies would deal with teen sex, pregnancies, and STIs by essentially sticking their fingers in their ears and loudly singing Bringing In The Sheep in the hope it'll all go away. |

That's seriously twisted. The little kid is just following daddy's wishes. Daddy needs therapy. |
