The 8 gig nano costs the same as the 30 gig ipod. I picked the latter, and though It works fine now, the crap I had to do to get it figured out in terms of getting video and mp3s converted didn't make it very appealing at first.

But it's easy to use once you get started.

The iPod/iTunes combo is unmatched for quality and ease of use. This is why they have utterly dominated the market for so long. They aren't perfect, but are certainly better overall than the alternatives. There are very vocal nay-sayers on the 'net', like the 'ogres' on this thread. But, for every one of those yapping dogs, there are thousands of happy puppies quietly enjoying their lovely iPods.

I would get the 4 or 8 GB Nano were I you. Great sound/looks/interface, and it's solid-state (i.e. no spinning hard-drive) so it is exceptionally durable.

I've owned two iPods. A Mini, now a 30gb model w/video and am eyeing a Nano for gym use. They've worked fine, no complaints.

Bumping this because I'm thinking of getting either a nano or an ipod. I'd rather have the ipod, because the price of the nano is such that if I spend $200 on the 4GB model, I might as well get an ipod for $50 bucks more (although aren't they a bit more here in ROK?).
But I'm wondering if an ipod is ideal for gym use? It weighs 4.8 oz compared to the tiny nano that weighs a merely 1.41 oz. I just don't know if I can justify spending that much on a nano when I can get so much more with an ipod.

I guess it all depends on what you are really gonna do with it... I have my entire mp3 library on my 30gb ipod, so I am never in a pinch for tunes on the move. If you are gonna use it strictly at the gym, maybe the nano is for you

iTunes is perfect for most users, though there are a couple of traps. iTunes rips CDs to .aac by default, and there are few other players that play this format. This has the effect of locking you into apple products unless you want to rip all your CDs again.

You can set iTunes to rip to .mp3 instead of .aac, but the bundled encoder for .mp3 is old and not very good.

The other downside of using an iPod over other brands is that when iTunes puts your music on your iPod it changes the filenames to meaningless strings, put them in random folders and hides them.

You can, on another computer, find them, and copy them across, but you need another program to use the information from the tags in the song files and rename them.

Having said all that, I use a 60Gb iPod, but use alternate software on it. This lets me plug it into any computer and drag music on and off, and play it straight away.

Much credit must go to Apple for making a device that works so easily, this enabled the masses to get into portable digital music in a big way. I am looking forward to the next generation of music players. The masses have learnt a lot about using these devices and might now be ready for more sophisticated functions.

I've taken my 30GB to the gym and it was ok. I don't really notice the weight but I would prefer to have a more secure clip or arm band. It hasn't fallen out yet but I also don't run on the treadmill so there's nothing high-impact. With it's moving parts, if you do plan to do a lot of high-impact work, it's not ideal. You're better to get the flash memory Nano with it's no moving parts.

I suppose I'm too late to be of any help to the op, but for anyone else who might be looking, after years of ipod pseudohate, i got one of the new shuffles. its 'really' tiny. think the size of watch face, and the entire back is a clip so you can clip it onto pretty much whatever you're wearing and completely forget it's there. It's only 1g, and its controls are minimal (no screen, play/pause, on/off, track select, volume, and random toggle). Its perfect for the way I listen to music though, and I hated the bugger, clunkier player that I had before. That was probably some of the best 80k that I've spent.

The only problem is that I wish it would support multiple playlists so I could easily swap between listening to books and music. I've considered buying another just for books though heh.

A couple of my students have one of those tiny little Shuffles. They said it's annoying to find a song they want. No screen would be a total no-no for me.

Wow good choice, I love that little one S10? Perfect for wearing around the neck.

I find that if you plan on listening to your own music at the gym you can just get a 1GB cheapo player and put all your gung-ho tracks on it. I'm using my D2 on the threadmill and even that is an overkill. Luckily its not big and bulky like some. You only want to listen to music if it motivates you or you want to avoid hearing those same Korean songs that being played over and over again on the PA. If you want to bring a hard-disk based mp3 player then that's the risk you're going to have to take.

Oh ya, it's not something you want if you need to be able to find specific things. I like to just dump over a bunch of music and hit random though, so it's good enough for me. My only problem is when I want to listen to books on tape. You pretty much just have to listen to the book all the way through without going back to your music, unless you want alot of annoying track searching.

It doesn't hehe. I said I wish it did. Then it would be pretty much perfect imo.
