They do a great curry with naan bread. The only problem is over-enthusiastic staff that asked me about 10 times if I wanted another drink and then took my glass away before I'd finished my beer - a real sin in NZ |
Yes, that irks me a bit when I go there.

Had to bring this thread back up.
I was outside 3 Alley Pub this weekend when I decided to go the bathroom. There was a Hi Seoul festival this weekend in Itaewon, so my crew decided this weekend that we were going to stay outside, instead of going into 3 Alley. We have been in there many times, and spent thousands of dollars there before (including on two stags nights).
As I walked into the bar to go the bathroom, I overheard Gunther's partner saying to me "Can I help you?", to which I replied, "I am going the bathroom". He asked again, "Can I help you?" I again replied, "I am going the bathroom". (I had some better replies flashing through my head, but I really just wanted to go the bathroom.) He replied, "That is not a public bathroom". Gunther said, "Get out of here". I turned to both of them and said "Me and my friends have been here many times, drank thousands of dollars of alcohol here, had stag parties here, and your telling me that because tonight I am not in your place drinking that I can't use your bathroom?" Gunther and his partner were a little bit uncomfortable, because I don't think there were used to having somebody stand up to them, much less make a racket while they were behind the bar. The partner said, "You can't use it." I turned to Gunther, and he nodded his head. I turned to both of them, and told them "Your ****ing *s*h*les, you two need to get your head out of your *s*es. You just lost a whole pile of customers permanently now because of your attitudes."
3 Alley Pub can suck eggs. I can assure you that there is a now a rather large group of us who will never go there again. |

I had a good friend do this one evening there -- announce aloud that he was boycotting the place for life and storm out the door. (Well, half "storm out" and half "told to get the fvck out by the G-man" as is often the case.) However, it wasn't over a "public loo" disagreement. It was over the waitress's strange refusal (or inability to grasp the concept) to give my friend the itemised receipt he needed for his meal & drinks instead of some Post-It™ with pen scribblings that they kept insisting he accept.
What was initially a bizarre refusal, possibly due to miscommunication, and a few moments of general confusion suddenly, and before everyone's bugged-out eyes , turned extremely hostile and combative (quite atypical for my friend, though all too familiar coming from that management). Within seconds the situation spiralled well beyond any hope of ever setting things right. And once again, just as in my case with the double shot that looked like a single, this whole exchange transpired right at a table of regulars -- the sort you assume any owner would be too smart to act like a pugnacious jerk in front of. |

"Good" what?
"Good riddance to a good customer that brought 3AP lots of business but then threw it all away by having the audacity to think he could go wee-wee once w/o buying a round"?
Or "Good for you for sticking to your guns. If they pulled that on me, I'd do the same. That's rotten treatment"?
Frankly, I can sort of understand the "no public loo" rule, BUT ONLY if they applied it across the board to each and every customer without exception, AND if they could bring themselves to be civil towards customers who treat them with the civility. If someone's being a d1ck, then fine, they get the bum's rush. But I've seen them go ballistic on some very decent people.

Good that he and his crew will not return.

Well, it's nice to get some kindly advice from the older generation. Somehow your parting words don't inspire me to open my mind...wonder why?
I don't usually mind old dudes, or "people of all ages getting together and enjoying themselves," [does this sound like a NAMBLA slogan to anyone else?] but every time I've been to 3 Alleys it's been ALL old dudes, which is cool, but hey. |

Come to think of it, Al had a rep at U.P.E.I. as an arrogant, stuck up airhead from the Brighton area of Charlottetown. He's always been sort of polite towards me, though.
Gunther has always struck me as somebody who's suffering from high blood pressure or someone who dislikes his occupation a lot. |

I specifically saw other people go in after me that were not in 3AP and they had no problems using the bathroom.

I am sure that there are more than a few people who know me off this board who would be willing to say that this was more than atypical for me to get this upset.

I assumed, mistakenly, that this would be the case with me as well, especially when I pointed out certain facts. I was sadly mistaken. |

I think the bottom line is that Gunther just plain doesn't like punks.
I've logged plenty of time on a bar stool in there and have always been treated very well and called by name after only my first few visits.
I've partied after hours with Gunther, his wife and friends at other spots and he always seemed like a decent guy to me.
But, maybe he has a dark side I haven't seen. |

Four pages of hand wringing and pissing and moaning over a freaking BAR. Christ almighty. It should be simple ... if you don't like it, don't go. I don't see what all the hoopla is about for yet another pale imitation of a 'Western pub' in Korea, with overpriced slop for food and overpriced booze. I once had the misfortune of ordering their 'calimari' and it was a freaking disgrace. Not to mention the last time I was there it was 8,000 won for a pint of Stella! Highway robbery.
The wait staff were hopeless (like much of the rest of Itaewon), a rather surly, slow lot that were generally disinterested in doing anything that might resemble work. The atmosphere was loud and unpleasant, full of testosterone and alcohol fueled belligerence, mostly coming from the group of bleary-eyed degenerates sitting at the bar tossing dice and swilling from an extraordinarily large glass boot. Judging by their levels of drunkeness, they had clearly been there far too long. Kind of sad for a bunch who appeared to be in their forties, some with wedding bands on one hand.
So I didn't go back. End of story. I'll stick to my local hof, thank you very much. |

I've always found Gunter to be fair. I don't go his bar a lot, but when I do, he'll wave and ask how's it going when I enter his bar. He'll ask what I want and will deliver the drink quickly. I've sat, talked and joked with him at his brother in law's bar. Gunter's a far better barkeep than his brother in law, even though I spend much more time in the brother in law's place.
If you don't like it, I'd suggest you choose another establishment. |
