As I work on multiple computers, here are a couple of applications that can run off of a USB drive:

Portable firefox
Nice to have all of my bookmarks and a decent browser while I move around my school.

Open Office Portable
I use some of the applications in class. Don't need to worry about different formats.

I didn't see anyone mention a free video editing program comparable to Adobe Premiere Pro. Does one exist? Thanks

Sounds like something that would be nice to install right after youve done a fresh re-install and have updated..

Something simple really. I'm trying to copy a *.cda file and convert it to an *.mp3 file. I used a program called Switch from NCH, freeware.

Anyway it creates an mp3 file that can't be played?

Help? Advice? Witty Criticism?

A quick google search turns up http://www.coolutils.com/Formats/CDA which links to a conversion tool but it's not free.

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - the biggest, baddest, best codec pack available, it also comes with Media Player Classic and Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative, which allow you to play Realtime and QuickTime files in almost any video player

Audio Construction Kit - somebody else mentioned Exact Audio Copy which is the best way to rip MP3s. this kit comes with that program along with the best and latest encoders and a few utilities

Eraser - freeware data-wiping program. great for when you sell your computer/get rid of your hard-drive/have paranoia issues with your data. have you emptied your recycle bin or formatted your computer thinking that those files are gone forever? think again. but this program will stop that from happening.

Unlocker - annoyed that there are some files Windows won't let you delete? this will let you get around that problem. works great with XP but with vista it isn't as good.

Firefox: replace Explorer but I've had issue with some Korean web sites not accepting it.

Winamp: my fave audio player. I like the playlists and the auto tag editor. You can also access yur tunes remotely via the internet now. Not some sluggish piece of crap like i-Tunes....I'm starting to hate i-Pod just because of the software.

Songbird: to interface with my i-Pod and replace i-Tunes on my desktop. Haven't used it yet, but it looks good. If it proves good, I may get rid of Winamp. Looks like i-Tunes, works like i-Tunes, doesn't suck like i-Tunes.

Floola: to replace i-Tunes on my i-Pod. Haven't tried this but it's supposed to be able to replace the operating system on your i-Pod enabling you to remove songs, change the filing system and a few other things.

Foxit Reader: to replace Acrobat Reader, comes with more features, allows me to underline and make notes on texts I need to read for school.

Gom Player: great little media player that has some great features for using subtitles. So far my fave video player. I used to use VLC but Gom has improved heaps, is a much nicer program (looks better, is easier to use), is great for subtitles and isa ble to play almost any vid you chuck at it. Beats VLC these days in my books.

Utorrent: my torrent program.

CutePDF: Makes PDF files from any document. Very handy when you wish to share your resume, your essays or articles or even your work for school

Imgburn: light simple program for burning files to disk and making ISOs.
