As I work on multiple computers, here are a couple of applications that can run off of a USB drive:

Portable firefox
Nice to have all of my bookmarks and a decent browser while I move around my school.

Open Office Portable
I use some of the applications in class. Don't need to worry about different formats.

I didn't see anyone mention a free video editing program comparable to Adobe Premiere Pro. Does one exist? Thanks

http://www.winpatrol.com/

WinPatrol uses a heuristic behavioral approach to detecting attacks and violations of your computing environment. Traditional security programs scan your hard drive searching for previously identified threats. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You'll be removing dangerous new programs while others prepare to update their definition/signiture data files.
As a MULTI PURPOSE SUPPORT UTILITY WinPatrol replaces multiple system utilities with its enhanced functionality. WinPatrol PLUS provides easy to understand descriptions of over 15,000 programs.

As a robust SECURITY MONITOR, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol PLUS includes our unique, patent pending R.I.D. technology.

Sounds like something that would be nice to install right after youve done a fresh re-install and have updated..

I love how simple it is and it's not a large file at all. It just runs in the background and pops up to ask permission for file association changes and other major changes....

I figured I'd add this on here since I found some nice programs from this thread.

Enjoy!

Something simple really. I'm trying to copy a *.cda file and convert it to an *.mp3 file. I used a program called Switch from NCH, freeware.

Anyway it creates an mp3 file that can't be played?

Help? Advice? Witty Criticism?

A quick google search turns up http://www.coolutils.com/Formats/CDA which links to a conversion tool but it's not free.
Quote:
CD Audio (.cda) tracks are audio files that can be stored on CD media. The .cda files are representations of CD audio tracks and do not contain the actual pulse code modulation (PCM) information. Cda files can be played only from a CD-ROM. To test a .cda file, either try to play a different .cda file from your CD-ROM or try to play a .cda file from a different CD-ROM. Copied from the CD-ROM to the hard disc it cannot be played. This is format used for encoding music on all commercial compact discs. If you buy a CD from a store, the music on that CD is stored in CDA format.

Audacity is probably the shizzle:

Open the .cda file with it and save it as MP3 or whatever. A tad laborious, but you will have more control over the output quality settings than other programs (freeware) may offer.

Other freeware progs and locations, unknown to me, untested.

I would recommend this website for news on freeware software programs (most of which are really good programs):

http://www.mrtech.com/news/

otherwise, besides what has been mentioned....

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack - the biggest, baddest, best codec pack available, it also comes with Media Player Classic and Real Alternative and QuickTime Alternative, which allow you to play Realtime and QuickTime files in almost any video player
http://www.codecguide.com/

Audio Construction Kit - somebody else mentioned Exact Audio Copy which is the best way to rip MP3s. this kit comes with that program along with the best and latest encoders and a few utilities
http://encoding.n3.net

Eraser - freeware data-wiping program. great for when you sell your computer/get rid of your hard-drive/have paranoia issues with your data. have you emptied your recycle bin or formatted your computer thinking that those files are gone forever? think again. but this program will stop that from happening.
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=37015

Unlocker - annoyed that there are some files Windows won't let you delete? this will let you get around that problem. works great with XP but with vista it isn't as good.
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Vidalia - great open source proxy software. recommended for use with firefox and the plugin foxyproxy.
http://vidalia-project.net/

Winamp - a classic music player which now supports video. if you stopped using it at one point, you might want to give it another shot due to improvements!

Firefox: replace Explorer but I've had issue with some Korean web sites not accepting it.

Winamp: my fave audio player. I like the playlists and the auto tag editor. You can also access yur tunes remotely via the internet now. Not some sluggish piece of crap like i-Tunes....I'm starting to hate i-Pod just because of the software.

Songbird: to interface with my i-Pod and replace i-Tunes on my desktop. Haven't used it yet, but it looks good. If it proves good, I may get rid of Winamp. Looks like i-Tunes, works like i-Tunes, doesn't suck like i-Tunes.

Floola: to replace i-Tunes on my i-Pod. Haven't tried this but it's supposed to be able to replace the operating system on your i-Pod enabling you to remove songs, change the filing system and a few other things.

Foxit Reader: to replace Acrobat Reader, comes with more features, allows me to underline and make notes on texts I need to read for school.

Gom Player: great little media player that has some great features for using subtitles. So far my fave video player. I used to use VLC but Gom has improved heaps, is a much nicer program (looks better, is easier to use), is great for subtitles and isa ble to play almost any vid you chuck at it. Beats VLC these days in my books.

Utorrent: my torrent program.

CutePDF: Makes PDF files from any document. Very handy when you wish to share your resume, your essays or articles or even your work for school

Imgburn: light simple program for burning files to disk and making ISOs.
