I recently applied for five jobs in Korea. However, I only have an AA and a CELTA, I do not have a BA.
One place did not respond to my application. Three others initially offered me a job, but had mistakenly thought that an AA was the same as a BA. Upon further clarification, they withdrew the offer of employment.
But the fifth school is still offering me a position, even though they fully understand I do not have a BA. They are offering a free flight with free accomodation.
Is this legal? What would happen if I accepted the position with the impression I was legal, but later was discovered to be illegal?
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. |

| It is not legal and you will not be given a work visa. Sorry, but you cannot legally teach in Korea with your qualifications, however good a teacher you may be. |

If it is not legal then you won't get the E2 visa that you need to work in the country ... It is not the school that makes the decision about whether it is legal or not .. It is immigration ...
The free flight and accommodation are standard here ... the question I have now is are they encouraging you to come and then apply for the E2 via a visa run ... or are they planning to apply for the E2 before you come.. I would say don't come unless immigration gives you an E2 visa. I am fairly sure that they won't give it to you ... and the last thing that you want to be is caught working illegally which you would be if working without it... Fines and Deportation are not worth it

We haven't discussed visa issues yet.
I've heard it may be possible to get an F-1-2 visa without a BA. Anyone know anything about this?

You can only get an F- visa if you're of Korean heritage or married to a Korean. |

You have 2 issues to deal with.
It is illegal for ANYONE to teach in a public school or LICENCED hakwon without a bachelors degree.
It is illegal for you to work without a proper visa.
F2 series for "married to a Korean" - can work but not teach without a degree
F4 for Korean ancestory (2 generations removed only) - can work but not teach without a degree
E2 for teachers of a foreign language - bachelors degree required for application.
Tourist visa or visa waiver stamp - no qualifications required but NOT allowed to do any remunerative activities.
In either case you, as described in your original post, CANNOT legally teach anything in Korea.
If you are here on an F-series visa you would face a criminal proceeding and a fine if you are caught (as the busted Korean teachers from the Jongno hakwons found out).
You CANNOT get a work visa with your quals.
If you are here on a tourist visa or visa waiver stamp you will have NO protection from an unscrupulous hakwon (who else will hire an illegal) AND
you will face fines, detention and deportation AT YOUR EXPENSE if you are caught. You would be held in detention until the fines and return flight to your home country are paid for.
Go to China. Wages and benefits are climbing and conditions are improving and you can get a work visa with your quals.

Thanks for the detailed post, ttompatz.
Do you know anything about Taiwan? I was offered a position there as well. I've heard it is possible to teach in Taiwan provided one has a teaching certificate. Any idea if this is true? |

| Why not finish your bachelor's and then you can find better jobs. How close are you to finishing? |
