I have seen a lot of disscussion over pay days, when they are and when they should be.
so when do you get paid?
I get paid on the 10th of the following month, which I don't have a problem with and its regular. |

I'm paid 10 days before the end of the month, like clockwork. |

For new teachers who read this:
( 1 ) A payday of the 10th is extremely late and you should ever settle for it in a labor contract.
( 2 ) Pursuant to Korean Law, your employer enventually has to pay you on a fixed date in the same work month and not the following work month.
( 3 ) A late payday such as the tenth (10th) of the following month is used to prevent teachers who are not satisfied with their school from pulling a "runner."

How exactly? So you run 10 days later than usual, but you can still run. You put in 10 days that you'll never see the money for? A pittance if the point is to get out of a horrible job with most of your money. |

I get paid on the 25th.
If the 25th is on a weekend, I get paid on the last business day before.
If the 25th is a holiday, I get paid before. |

I don't consider it late as its paid regularly on the due date. Also it is normal practice in some Western businesses to pay the month following. My uni salary was paid on the 14th of the following month so I'm quite used to it. |

I started working on the 25th of the month, and so I got paid for the first time on the 25th of the following month. I always get paid on time, and if the 25th falls on a weekend, then I get paid the Friday before. No complaints here. |

I beg to differ.
I am quite happy to be paid on the tenth of the month and if it comes to it, it really separates the men from the boys. I mean only the boys pull a runner from a job yet the men sorts out things professionally.
No wonder hagwons are defensive by paying on the tenth of the month, as there seems to be so many unprofessional and incompentent teachers in Korea who will be unable to hold a job in their own country.
Perhaps you are too insecure to understand my point and perhaps you are too unprofessional to understand the Korean perspective.
Now, let the fight begin |

I get paid on the 10th. Quite a few months back, prior to accepting my position, I read all of alabamaman's contract critiques and advice, so I asked my recruiter at the time why payday was on the 10th. She responded that this was very normal, and that all Koreans were paid on the 10th or the 25th of the following month. I thought this to be interesting. Really, I don't care what day they pay me on, as long as it's on time, and there aren't any illegal deductions. I asked my recruiter that question simply to see if she would tell me the real reason hagwons pay on the 10th, of if she would make up a cute excuse that didn't involve mentioning foreigners doing a midnight runner to Thailand. |

Alabamaman,
You and others have been making this claim a long time, but no one has ever posted an actual reference showing this is true. Do you have one? |

I think they are making reference to Article 42 of the Korean Labor Standards Act but it is not exactly as quoted.
Article 42 (Payment of Wages)
(1) Payment of wages shall be directly made in full to worker in cash; however, if otherwise stipulated by special provisions of laws or decrees or a collective agreement, wages may partially be deducted or may be paid by other than cash.
(2) Wages shall be paid more than once per month on a fixed day; however, this shall not apply to extraordinary wages, allowances, or any other similar payment or those wages provided for by the Presidential Decree. |

ttompatz,
I've seen that reference before, however, there is nothing there that states that payment must be made withing the same month that the wages were earned. It only states that workers must be paid every month. Having a delay in payment so that the wages being paid fall a week or two after they are earned is not precluded. Nor does it preclude paying wages in the month following.
Indeed, as was pointed out by another poster in a related thread, it would be impossible to calculate overtime (or undertime, sick days etc.) so as to pay a worker within the same month.
If that is the only reference, then the oft asserted claim that wages must be paid withing the same month must be false. |

And if the school refuses to sort things out professionally (as many do)? Of course, you can go to the Labor Board or Pension Board and have THEM sort it our for you, but if the school refused to deal with you before you did this, you can bet they will make life hell for you AFTER you do this. And running at this point, I'd still be a boy, by your definition? A bit simplistic, no? |
