|
|
i know there is the mexican food thread, but i want something more specific.
with the limited ingredients in korea, has anyone scrounged up a decent marinade for carne asada recipe?
i tried marinating with a bit of beer, oil, lemon (should be lime, but again: limited ingredients) juice, and some "fajita seasoning" picked up from costco. it turned up pretty bland, and was basically ruined when i turned my back and the woman decided to fry it in whiskey.
so, any help? |

You can buy lime juice from Homever and Home Plus, and dried cilantro leaves at the black market stores in Itaewon. The quality of the meat here is lacking. The fajita seasoning at costco is terrible - too sweet. Just use a packet of the Taco seasoning, the foreign food store in Hannam or Itaewon is the best price I've found. Also prob. available at the foreign goods arcade in Namdaemun. |

I thought everyone on this board lived in Seoul. You mean there are other places in South Korea? |

quieres concinar carne asada?

Yeah, but I think what the OP wants is to find a makeshift solution in Korea. Ordering stuff from one's familia is a pain in the @$$ for both parties, more expensive, and takes forever. Though the stuff from home IS the best, there are ways to get around it. |

Or, one could go to Thailand, have an awesome time, eat great Thai/Chinese/Italian/Middle-Eastern/you-name-it-food, pick up the authentic spices for Mexican food there mad cheap, then return to Korea I guess. |

You can get fresh cilantro at Garak Shi Jang (Garak Market) in southeast Seoul, in Songpa-gu. I have it on word from someone who cooks at a Mexican restaurant. |

cumin, chilis, salt, garlic, limes, googled recipes, cilantro, and dead animals; it's here. You can have it all.
They call cilantro by different names here; remember, its the leaf of the coriander plant, so try 'coriander' or 'chinese parsley' when looking for it. Basically go to richkid groceries (hyundai and lotte supermarts, like) and sniff every parsley-looking thing you see, and you'll find it.
You do need to go to Seoul tho I think.
Happy 5 de Mayo, btw |
