And I don't mean the straight-to-the-resort tour. I mean the official government tour to the 'nice' parts of NK. I've heard that they'll give you an insert for your passport that you can tear out so you can return to ROK. Can anyone verify this? I'd love to try this tour this summer. |

this guy did it. I looked into it. The problem isn't with the South Korean authorities, the problem is getting a visa from the North.
Basically you need to find someone willing to act as a sponsor to say you are employed by them in a country that isn't Korea. Which you can read about here.
I do think that you should think about this very carefully. Of all the countries to fudge the truth about during the Visa process, I NK isn't one of them. Chances are that nothing will happen, but if some bored clerk starts looking through your passport you could be in serious trouble and have to hope the Swedish Embassy is feeling nice that day to help you out.
But if you decide to go, it's a trip you'll never forget. |

When are they? How are you planning on getting there? Will you be working in ROK at the time? |

http://www.koryotours.com/tours/index.html
This is the website and tour company that I plan on using.
It gives specific dates for the Mass Games as well. I want to be there for either the opening or closing ceremony. I have a lot of flexibility on when I can take a vacation so I should be able to make it.
I guess I'll be flying into Beijing and then Koryo Tours gets you onto a flight into Pyongyang.
I'm also considering taking the train back to Beijing from Pyongyang if I have enough time.
I will be working in Seoul at the time so that part will be tricky. I'll have to do a lot more research on that. |

i find it unbelievable that people think about visiting that coutry. for what purpose? to support their government by throwing thousands of dollars at them to come in for a few days. do you really want to give your money to a government that lets their people suffer they way they do? a country that still has thousands of people dying in labor camps for no good reason? morally, i just couldn't do it. and any argument you may present can't dispute the fact that its that simple.....you are supporting that government. |

Yes, I know all that.
However, have you ever purchased gasoline for your car? Because there is a good chance that some of your money is going to the regime in Saudi Arabia which also has a horrible human rights record.
I realize I'm supplying the North Koreas with money (although I assume tourism only represents a small portion of the nations budget), but at the same time I feel it's important that some Westerners see the country first hand.
Yes, you will have a guide the entire time feeding you constant propaganda, but you can still learn a lot and perhaps influence some people there and abroad with your experience.
Morally it's wrong. But sometimes you have to shift your moral compass because it is an immoral world out there. |

gasoline is necessary for many people to make their livelihoods in this world.......visiting communist North Korean......not so much
please don't compare the two
if you want to know more about the awful things that happen there....read about them...try The Aquariums of Pyongyang....that might turn you off from visiting |

Don't hijack.
Leave the man alone. I don't hear him telling you what to do.
I also plan to visit the North, waiting until my Korean is better though. |

Do you know if Koryo Tours is the only agency with whom you can go? |

Gasoline from Saudi is not a necessity. Brazilians these days are mainly using ethanol to propel their cars. |
