I agree with Satori. Can't people just do it for fun? Do we really need old man superacidjax telling us "English Only! English Only!"
I'll mix in some 한국말 into my posts, and I don't feel arrogant about doing it. Why not? Because I can't imagine anybody being very impressed by it. It's a completely trivial skill. The fact that it inspires such contempt is just bizarre. |

| I mix in 한글 occasionally because I don't care much for any of the romanization systems. I use the M-R romanization system when I write academic papers, as that is the standard in Korean studies, but I like representing Korean words using Korean letters otherwise. I'm definitely not trying to prove anything; actually, even though I've been involved with Korea for nearly a quarter century, my Korean language ability is so-so at best (표현을 잘못해요). |

I find it just as ridiculous that on this very board there are a significant number of lonely white guys trying to act like they are Koreans. Let me be more specific. It's obnoxious when, in a post, some guy (it's usually always a guy) types Hangul letters or uses the Korean name for something when it isn't needed.
It's one thing when you are trying to help someone on the board and you type the Korean letters in order to help the person recognize the word so they can buy the item in the store. Using Hangul to help "identify" something that isn't usually transliterated into English is very helpful.
But, using Hangul letters simply to "show off" or be a poser Korean is just pathetic. I've read many posts on this board where people would type the Korean letters for subway stops! Why the heck would they do that? It seems like a snot that knows Latin, using Latin terms around people who can't speak latin, just to be "sophisticated."
I can read Korean all day long, but I know that most people on this board can't. This is an English language board. So use English. Type the hangul only when needed to HELP someone. Rather than make Dave's a place that features arrogant snots, perhaps we should make Dave's a friendly place. A place that's accessable, even for the fresh off the boat westerner that doesn't know a word of Korean.
Stop trying to impress us. It doesn't work. You just look pathetic and socially inept. Desperate, even.

I get annoyed when people use English letters to write a Korean word, unless it's a very common word we all know, like babo or ajumma. The reason I prefer Korean letters is that there is not a common transliteration set, making it difficult and cumbersome trying to figure out what was being said.
A good example is in threads that talk about food. For me, it's so much easier to peruse the list if it's written in Korean. Just imagine reading English like this: 아이 씬크 유 아 베리 리디큘러스 포 콤플래닝 어바웃 디스. It's an English sentence, but annoying to read, right?
Additionally, I think that if you have been living in Korea for more than two weeks and can't read Korean yet, you are lazy and/or apathetic, and thus don't deserve to know whatever it is I've just typed. Korean is just such an easy alphabet to learn, there is simply no reason not to do so.

It's not always about showing off, there's another reason I can think of, fun, pure and simple. A sense of play is healthy. And play with language, especially the native language of the country you're in, and especially when you're a language teacher, has got to be healthy. And this forum is about a whole lot more than "help", that is a small part of it. It's a huge discussion board, and most of it is debate and banter.

I meant the 'skill' of being able to type in Korean and mix a few Korean words into your posts. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort to be able to do it, and it's not a super useful thing to do. Actually being fluent in Korean, however, isn't trivial. |

I tend to use Korean letters instead of English because I feel like a goof trying to Romanize words. Also, romanized words can be really confusing and difficult to pronounce properly, e.g., let's meet at Shincheon vs. Shinchon, or Sangsu vs. Seongsu. Romanization tends to encourage poor pronounciation, and just looks dumb sometimes.
And sometimes it's just fun to make little remarks in Korean, 그래쵸? |

Ha ha ha.. well. Are you talking about 어머나? One thing cool about using Korean here is that there's no filter for Korean swears 씨발~ㅋㅋ |

It's just natural that people living in Korea are going to pick up and use a little Korean.
