Interesting followup on the original story....

Let's wait and see if there is any progress or if the ball just gets dropped AGAIN by the agencies involved.

AND it is continued here:

Wow - Gelken has gone from lame-assed to producing some great articles in a short space of time. I'm really quite impressed. He seems to be well on top of this situation and many others.

Yeah hunt down those nasty foreigners, good article.
I liked the hypocrisy of Mun Yei-seung who spoke for the Daejeon Foreign Language Association (DFA)

Quote:
When pressed, Mun acknowledged that some illegal activities do take place, even within his own association. But when asked if he would report these hagwon to the authorities he told The Korea Herald: "Me personally, I don't do anything. Because I am quite well known in this community, so if I do something, they will know it was me, and that is too much for me."

Should be charged with accessory to commit a crime. Then he says they have no guidelines for themselves, great those foreigners better behave themselves but no one tells us to obey the law
"It is something we should develop, you have given me a good idea. Yes, we encourage our directors to follow the law, but to tell you the truth we have not made any guidelines, so we have seen some conflicts between directors in the association. And I have seen some sad things as well. Yes it's a good idea,"
He also goes on to excuse the non payment of health insurance by claiming many of their students have doctors as parents and can treat them cheaply
Rolling Eyes

Quote:
"In our case, a lot of (our) parents are doctors, so when we take our teachers to the doctor the cost is so little - then you know, as long as the teacher is okay, as long as the teacher and director is happy, it is their business. If one side of them is not happy, they have to do things by the law - but if the two are happy, there is nothing to say.

Wow, these people really are above the law and he just admitted to not paying health which is a crime whether the teacher and director are happy or not. Think someone should tip of the local health insurance agency to go check his books, what's his school name? ah, Yang G ELS in Daejeon.

Quote:
n light of the recent DFA campaign against illegal private tutoring, one teacher said this is an unacceptable position. "If the DFA is going to support strict enforcement of immigration laws, they should also be ready to support stricter enforcement of labor laws," the teacher wrote to The Korea Herald.

And good luck to Charles
Quote:
Charles made the mistake of putting his English name and mobile telephone number on the banners, and was deluged with calls from outraged teachers. He fielded the complaints, and initial inquiries from The Korea Herald, by saying he was a volunteer worker and was not directly linked to the hagwon sector.

Shocked at the unprecedented attention the banner campaign has generated and the possibility of a lawsuit, hagwon directors in the DFA are attempting to shift blame and responsibility, and the unfortunate Charles has positioned himself beautifully to take on the new role of scapegoat.

Has anyone seen these banners recently?

Chris Gelken is a well-respected journalist. He's been around the Asia scene for quite some time. In fact he used to host BizChina on CCTV9 (man, that takes me back to my student days Shocked )

We are really lucky to have someone like him on our side.

I seem to remember a few of his first articles leaving me feeling a bit uninspired, but I guess it takes everyone a while to get a feel for the land. The English language press here is in desperate need of well-respected journalists, to be sure.

Hells bells....look at the sign attached to the bus....and I might add, correct usage of English words is not someone's forte' obviously......koreans DO need FT's!
The sign reads: You Are Being Watched, Private tutoring of English is a Legal Offense!

OK......Why be watched if its legal, koreans?!?
The correct word should be illegal.

Chris was also instrumental on helping/reporting the goings on of the busan 9 and his help was VERY much appreciated by everyone involved there.

Congrats Chris. This article is even better!
