|
|
I was offered a 2 week public school camp job that would pay 2million. I was told that the camp runs for 13 days, including weekends. I was also told during the interview that the camp would start after my 9 day vacation that I had planned about 2 months ago. After I gave a verbal commitment, I found out a few days later that the camp started after my vacation, but I would be required to come in during my planned vacation to attend orientation. I explained that I'm not going to do that, but the camp director said I already gave them my word and that they want me to cancel my vacation or alter it so that I come back before the training starts. I told them that I was never told about the training commencing before the start date until after I agreed to work. The camp sent me a contract last week, which I have not signed, but they are telling me that I have to teach at it.
I agreed to teach a camp at my school during the vacation, but not this privately run one. Am I being unreasonable in refusing to work at the private camp? I told them I would do it, but then they changed the start date, told me to alter my vacation to fit their schedule, and I haven't even signed the contract which, in my opinion, would bind me to working there. |

They changed the terms AFTER you had your agreement and BEFORE you signed the contract so your word is NOT binding.
NO is the magic answer for them. |

You are not unreasonable. They changed the date. You need your time off. Verbal agreements won't hold up in a court. Just keep saying, "No, I did NOT agree to THAT. I agreed to THIS and you changed it to THAT." When you buy a car and say you will buy a red coupe, you don't take a green stationwagon because the dealer decided to change it. |

Right, they changed the agreement after you agreed to it...you would not have agreed to it if they would have told you up front. I love it! |

They also said that since I expressed interest in the camp and wanted to interview for the job, I am required to teach since they offered the position |

No is the simplest and easiest way to say it...No contract in this country is binding unless it can be proven with documentation...Entering verbal agreements are a crap shoot if you are planning anything...Too bad you got taken advantage of, but hopefully it is a lesson well learned... |
