UlaanBaatar - anything going on in Mongolia's capital city?

The rural areas seem to be the place to be.. is there much to do in the capital? The streets seem wide and spread-out soviet-style. Whats the impressions on actually walking and exploring the city streets of UlaanBaatar?

According to lonely planet there are some nice museums, art galleries, monasteries and restaurants. The book also suggests that a nice walking tour can be done. I plan on going out to the Gobi and some other places, so I doubt I'll see much......

Sorry I can't help much. I posted some questions about Mongolia and pretty much got NO replies....

I'm going for five days during Chuseok (wanted more, since I have 10 days off, but flight availability... Sad

). I'll probably spend two or three days in the capital and try to get out the other two.

A buddy of mine owns a Canadian bar in Ulaan Bataar. After our hockey team from here went there twice for tournaments, he decided he loved it so much he moved there. He used to be the cook at RMT.

Well I can't comment on the capital whatsoever, but I can add this little bit about Mongolia:

I have a relative who lived in Africa for about a decade and travels everywhere in the developing world for work (he is an engineer for some NGO in DC). And where does he want to go for his 50th birthday? He wants to return to Mongolia. He was there a couple years ago, and became so enchanted with it that he wants to spend a couple weeks biking through the southern part of the country.

I figure if someone as well-traveled as him wants to spend a big birthday in Mongolia, it must be a pretty impressive place to visit.

I was just in Mongolia for 4 weeks in June/ July. UB is only worth a day imho. The Tibetan temple & the square, then out. Streets are broken up & traffic is chaotic. Terelj, Khovsgol Lake & the Gobi were far superior.
