UlaanBaatar - anything going on in Mongolia's capital city?
The rural areas seem to be the place to be.. is there much to do in the capital? The streets seem wide and spread-out soviet-style. Whats the impressions on actually walking and exploring the city streets of UlaanBaatar? |

I'll let you know when I get back...August 9th baby!
According to lonely planet there are some nice museums, art galleries, monasteries and restaurants. The book also suggests that a nice walking tour can be done. I plan on going out to the Gobi and some other places, so I doubt I'll see much......
Sorry I can't help much. I posted some questions about Mongolia and pretty much got NO replies....
When are you going? |

I'm going for five days during Chuseok (wanted more, since I have 10 days off, but flight availability... ). I'll probably spend two or three days in the capital and try to get out the other two.
I look forward to your report for some ideas, Alyallen. |

A buddy of mine owns a Canadian bar in Ulaan Bataar. After our hockey team from here went there twice for tournaments, he decided he loved it so much he moved there. He used to be the cook at RMT. |

Chuseok was the time I was considering as well. If flight ability is that difficult, looks like I'll look for other options. (I have 9 days available at that time).
I'm also looking forward to Allyallen and some recent first-hand observations of the capital and country as well. |

Very prompt replies and very informative.
If you are insane like me and like guns, they even offer a trip to a firing range and you can even shoot a rocket |

"If you need easy speaks tour assistant per day 8 USD + 4 USD for food."
Sounds awesome. But seriously, I do want to go to Ulaanbaatar at some point. |

You know, I've never been so much tempted by shooting guns, but a rocket...
TigerBeer - Part of the problem is that the flights in arrive late at night and the flights out leave just after midnight for Seoul. Thus, what appears to be a seven-day trip only gives you five full days in country. That's where I am at now. I'm a waiting list for a ticket that will give me seven full days. You may want to check. |

Well I can't comment on the capital whatsoever, but I can add this little bit about Mongolia:
I have a relative who lived in Africa for about a decade and travels everywhere in the developing world for work (he is an engineer for some NGO in DC). And where does he want to go for his 50th birthday? He wants to return to Mongolia. He was there a couple years ago, and became so enchanted with it that he wants to spend a couple weeks biking through the southern part of the country.
I figure if someone as well-traveled as him wants to spend a big birthday in Mongolia, it must be a pretty impressive place to visit. |

Except for that late night Korean PC-Bang you might run into in the capital...
I heard Cass Beer is everywhere...as the Korean presense is suppose to be noticeable. |

Actually no. I fly in the 9th and then from the 10-23/24 I'll be bouncing around on the paved (or unpaved) roads, riding a camel or horse and running around in the desert. I want to get as far away from civilization as I can...pretty funny idea coming from a native New Yorker |

I was just in Mongolia for 4 weeks in June/ July. UB is only worth a day imho. The Tibetan temple & the square, then out. Streets are broken up & traffic is chaotic. Terelj, Khovsgol Lake & the Gobi were far superior. |
