David Eddings is a pretty good read.

If you can find them, which is a bit difficult considering their age, I cannot highly enough recommend the Fafrd and Grey Mouser series of novels / short stories by Fritz Lieber. They're witty, slightly caustic, a little whimsical, adventurous and totally unique. Memorable protagonists and a very different take on fantasy. The style changes somewhat from book to book, and some of the later ones get a bit weird, but overall absolutely worth the effort.

Anyway, back to the OP, I too am an avid HP fan and I thoroughly reccomend the 'Power of Five' series by Anthony Horowitz (Famous for his Alex Rider series). It's aimed at young adults but it's well written like HP.

Just go read the Black Company by Glenn Cook. Make you wish you hadn't been wasting your time with Harry Potter.
