Honestly, I know alcoholics in this country, people who piss the bed nightly or get sacked every two months who can still manage to use an apostrophe correctly. How come seemingly functional people can't? I think it's because most of you young folk weren't beaten enough at school.
That is all. |

Abuse the kids so that they don't abuse the language. I like it. |

It's because everyone under the age of 35 have written more emails and IM's than they have actual letters and essays. |

I'm under 35. Besides, everyone under the age of 35=they=have. Plural subject and you're supposed to use have. You don't say 'they has' do you? The only time you use have with a singular subject is with 'I'. IM's a bit more murky, it's really just an abbreviation, I've just always seen it written with the apostrophe.
But go ahead and be a grammar nazi if you want. |

It's hard to ask others to stop being a grammar Nazi when you're a grammar Anne Frank.
"Everyone have a ticket."
"Everyone has a ticket."
Which one would you write in your diary?
PS) Under 35
PPS) Not a Nazi

Sorry, dude. You're just plain wrong about the "have" thing. Just admit you got smoked while trying to put down someone else. Just live with it and move on. |

Well, thanks for correcting me. I wasn't the one who was putting someone else down though, so p!ss off. Grammar's a little more difficult when you're hungover.
The funniest thing is that I actually used 'has' at first and then corrected myself. My grammar's not really that bad, but I did just start teaching it about three weeks ago. It'll take me a while to brush up on the rules considering I haven't studied grammar since the 6th grade. |

See this is why English grammar is such a b!tch.
Not everyone have become grammar nazi's actually sounds ok.
Not everyone has become a grammar nazi sounds better.
Or how about, they have become grammar nazi's.
Are both right? |

The second one is the best. The first and third contain a very embarrassing apostrophe error. Also the third one contains a subject/verb disagreement. |

Well, apostrophes are minor. When you hear someone speaking you don't know where the apostrophes are, so they always seemed less important to me than the actual sentence structure.
And like I said, I haven't studied grammar since the 6th grade, so I don't mind being corrected, as long as people aren't a$$es about it. We could all use a little constructive criticism now and then, but it's the attitude some have that makes them think they're better because they know every obscure rule (not that these are obscure), that irritates me. If you've been teaching English for years your grammar should be better than someone who just started, if it isn't then you're probably not a very good teacher because you can't even teach yourself. |
